This morning at 11 in Cluefield schools, students will hear addresses from city leaders supporting American Education Week. Superintendent M P Shawkey coordinated the day with Bluefield Post No 9 American Legion members presenting brief talks on respect for the flag, anthem, and government authorities. Speakers include W W McNeal at the High School, James Kahle at Ramsey Street, Bernard McClaugherty at Wade, W H Thomas at East End, D E French at Fairview, with Ernest Henson at Northside noted.
Tom and Tracy Macklin were shot and seriously wounded during a clash linked to a packing house strike in Fort Worth. Fred Rouse, identified as the man who shot the Macklins, was badly beaten by a crowd and hospitalized after the incident in front of the Armour and Co plant.
Buffalo dispatch reports scouts finding minor league talent thin as talks on Heinie Groh trade with Cincinnati Reds stall. McGraw denies closing deal while Barrow says no new major league acquisitions. executives from Ebbets Dreyfus and Griffith weigh prospects and minor league draft debates continue into next sessions.
Ottawa reports Premier Meighen defeated in his home riding as Harry Leader of the Progressive party trails. Early returns show a Liberal landslide led by W. L. Mackenzie King with seven cabinet members defeated and Senator Robertson conceding defeat for the government at about 11 PM.
Moc Baron of Brooklyn New York faces trial on the charge of obtaining whiskey from a Pittsburg warehouse by fraudulent means. The government says he used a medical permit to obtain liquor meant for beverage use. Five hundred cases were seized in Youngstown en route to Brooklyn as the case starts.
F C Coppus of Worcester Mass outlined at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers convention in New York how improved locomotive combustion could trim railroads coal bills by 315 million dollars annually. He cited Santa Fe tests backing a twenty percent direct fuel saving from a mechanically induced draft at the locomotive front.
Three Rivers Michigan December 6 A circuit court jury in Centerville acquitted Mrs Levinne Plummer Sleck fifty four of the murder of her seventy five year old husband whose body was found in the basement of their home on September 16 last.
London reports a historic 18 article accord granting Ireland the title of the Free State and constitutional status akin to Canada and other dominions. Allegiance questions were resolved by swearing to the Free State constitution while remaining loyal to the king. The Ulster stance remains uncertain as imperial Parliament readiness is noted.
Italian WWI hero General Diaz visited Pittsburg on December 6 and spoke at a public reception urging Italians in the district to become good American citizens. He praised local industries for war effort and saluted American soldiers who fought with Italians. The train arrived at 7:45 and departed two hours later for Washington.
Elkins West Virginia December 6 movement of coal and other freight on the West Virginia division of the Western Maryland Railway was the heaviest in six months. From 650 to 800 coal loads were moved from Upper Potomac mines last Sunday aided by the reopening of three mines in the Harrison Blaine fields operated by Blaine and Dodson and Wolfden companies.
Philadelphia reports the Reading Railway collision at Bryn Athyn left twenty seven dead with thirteen identified and fourteen still missing. Nine bodies and fragments at the morgue were too burned to identify. several injured remain in critical condition.
A shore supply boat from Rickey Transportation Co of Covington Kentucky and a Lyons & Sons sand digger boat from Henderson West Virginia sank in the Kanawha River near Gallipolis Ohio late at night. Five men aboard escaped. The cause of the accident is unknown.
Berlin dispatch reports about a massive oil tank explosion at the Nobel Dynamite Works in Saarlouis Rhenish Prussia. About a hundred people were killed as the tank blew up and the works caught fire.
Washington December 6 quick reaction to President Harding's message to congress appeared in the house during an afternoon of rambling debate on multiple topics. Representatives Gallivan Huddleston Mondell sparred over soldier bonus plans and labor policy with sharp questions and defenses about the president's handling of labor and the wartime legacy.
Samuel Gompers denounces the plan as a revision to conditions from more than four centuries ago. The AFL leader says the message shows misunderstanding of worker employer relations and urges a modern approach to labor disputes.
The bituminous coal mine inspectors of Pennsylvania began their two day annual conference in Pittsburg today. General discussions and addresses highlighted the session. S. E. Button, chief of the state department of mines, led thirty inspectors from across the state at the convention.
Bluefield Post No. 9 of the American Legion will host National Commander Hanford MacNider on Thursday December 16. The visit was confirmed by the national organization and he is expected to address the post and city unless unforeseen circumstances arise.
Rome December 6 Former Turkish Grand Vizier Said Ali Pasha was fatally shot while strolling in the city. He died en route to a hospital. the shooter remains at large.
Washington reports the Senate Finance Committee ended a day of debate on the foreign debt bill without a report to the Senate. The sticking point is a House proposal granting a five member supervisory commission power over war loan negotiations. Senator Simmons leads a possible Republican shift toward his amendment, while some Democrats oppose it and plan a minority meeting to decide on united support.
The Cantigny transport arrived in New York carrying eleven officers and 600 men from the army of occupation in Germany. Also aboard were fifteen former servicemen, nurses, and civilian workers. The ship carried seventy three German born wives of American soldiers and eight Rhine babies.
Chicago reports six thousand more workers joined the strike as packers claim ninety to ninety five percent of men on duty. Amalgamated Meat Cutters says strikers grow, while Cornelius Hayes cites twelve thousand on strike locally. Violence flares as police face strike sympathizers. Fort Worth reports injuries and possible troop patrols discussed for St. Paul and Kansas City.
Chicago reports the petroleum industry must raise its reserves and keep steady production to prevent oil price fluctuations. Walter C. Teagle of Standard Oil (NJ) urged stability via continued production and storage. Edward L. Doheny noted Mexico’s oil regions require more development, while Edwin H. Rizer of Vacuum Oil warned Europe’s demand drives global search for petroleum.
Roanoke man David L. Taylor formerly editor of the News at Medina died today in Whrichsville Ohio from internal injuries suffered last night in an automobile accident.
