The United Mine Workers approve a new contract 56 percent of voters, effective 12:01 a.m. Friday. Miners expected to return Monday, with 79,495 of 120,000 voting. 44,754 yes, 34,741 no. Five regions rejected the pact amid a separate talks pending for 4,000 construction workers.
Indications from area businessmen and the Bluefield Chamber of Commerce show Mercer County and the Bluefield area were not greatly impacted by the United Mine Workers strike started November 12. Local officials anticipate a return to normal as the economy remains positive, with minor effects expected if the strike had lasted longer.
Roanoke report notes an end to the coal strike will not immediately affect 1100 furloughed Norfolk and Western Railway workers. A 4 week strike has cost over 75 000 loads of coal and 20 to 30 million in lost revenue. The company cites 391 workers not called Thursday and hopes coal shipments near normal by mid next week.

Bluefield Virginia police investigate the death of 72 year old Earl C Harman after a Thursday morning fire at his home on Virginia Avenue. An autopsy will determine cause of death and funeral arrangements are set at Dudley Memorial Mortuary.
Officials announced that schools in Tazewell, Buchanan County remain closed until Monday due to snow and ice on secondary roads making bus travel hazardous. Mercer and Bland Counties already planned Monday reopenings. All other area schools are operating today.

Several southern West Virginia coal mines were to reopen at 12:01 a.m. Friday after a 23 day soft coal strike ended with a ratified contract. Consol officials said production could start tonight at southern mines with northern operations possibly back by midnight Sunday. District 28 reported 58 percent ratification. District 29 reported 67.2 percent in favor. Officials expected most miners to return Monday. some mines in Virginia were also to restart as the new pact takes effect.
U S House Administration Committee chair Rep Wayne Hays says preliminary reports find little substance to Democratic charges of irregularities in southwest Virginia 9th District’s Nov 5 election. Rep William C Wampler won by about 2400 votes over Democrat Charles Horne amid claims of registration errors and machine issues.
Corte Construction Co warns the Bluefield Public Housing Authority that winterizing the Hill Street project could cause major damage to buildings. The firm urges immediate occupancy, arguing the project is ready for residents to prevent moisture related harm to paint, drywall, partitions and metal surfaces.
