The 1942 New York dispatch reports Lt Commander Joe Brice Cochran of a minesweeper earning the Silver Star for gallantry during Solomon Islands actions. His ship weathered seven enemy air attacks while escorting transports and mine sweeping in August and September, with Cochran praising Allied air crews and vowing American resolve. He is a 1924 Annapolis graduate, widower with daughter Gracia, and kin residing in Kimball and Blackstock. The treasurer reported 14 members who paid their pledge for the year. Mrs Vaughan led devotional time with a prayer. Mrs Organ spoke on The First Thanksgiving, Vaughan told a Thanksgiving story, and Miss Vaughan read Thanksgiving. The Lord's Prayer closed the program before a social hour served lemon pie and coffee to listed attendees.

Death of R. E. Fitch at 71 After Illness
R. E. Fitch, 71, died Tuesday night of a heart attack after a two day illness. A longtime McDowell County resident born in Greenville Va he worked for Tidewater Coal and Norfolk and Western Railway before joining the Kimball Junior High staff as janitor. He is survived by two sisters three brothers and several nieces and nephews. Funeral at Houston Methodist Church then interment in Greenville Va. Sister Miss Kate Fitch preceded him this spring. STORK SHOWER honors Mrs Robert McConnell hosted by Mrs Vergie Brown and Mrs Fortunato Grego with games and gifts for Mrs McConnell formerly Miss Gwendolyn Cartwright.
