Wall Street Falls as Investors Pessimistic about Profit Prospects

Wall Street declined for a second straight day as investors awaited the Federal Reserve meeting amid fears of bank losses from a slumping housing market. JPMorgan cut earnings estimates for Goldman Sachs, Lehman, Merrill Lynch, and Morgan Stanley, while major banks including Citigroup and Bank of America fell. Dow fell 65.84 to 13,248.73, S&P 500 down 9.63 to 1,462.79, and Nasdaq off 17.30 to 2,619.83 as oil slid and fears of recession grew.
