CSX and Norfolk Southern report year to date coal load increases of 59 000 and 39 400 cars respectively while warning that power and empty car shortages hinder faster movement. Experts cite conservative forecasting and aging fleet as factors, with railcar backlogs rising to highest since 1998 and Massey Energy noting sales dips due to transport disruption.
