The Labor Department reports 72.8 million Americans were employed in November, with unemployment at 4.2 percent of a 75.8 million civilian labor force. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 500000 from October, while unemployment fell despite a rise in jobless numbers due to seasonal factors.
New York Army recruiting sergeant Staff Sgt Winfred Lewis was arrested after allegedly soliciting a $200 bribe from Jets player Bob Schweickert to place him at the top of a National Guard list. FBI said the scheme aimed to bypass the draft. Schweickert reported the offer to team officials who alerted authorities. Lewis faces up to 15 years and a $20,000 fine if convicted.
Norma Riedel protests the draft for her 19 year old son Robert Schnabel by telegrams to President Johnson and Chicago Army HQ. A McDowell County man Blaine Serouse about 50 from Litwar area was shot to death late Thursday night in the Coon Branch area at Jaeger. State police investigated as the body was taken to Fanning Funeral Home Jaeger. No details on the circumstances or shooter were available.
