McDowell County faces sheriff deputies cuts and looming layoffs
Sheriff Martin West warns that if a budget miracle does not occur, six more McDowell County Sheriff's Department deputies will lose their jobs by year end. The department, already pared to 14 officers, would drop to seven and lose evening and night coverage, forcing reliance on the West Virginia State Police. West cites budget cuts, talks with county officials, and appeals to the ARC and Sen. Joe Manchin for relief while exploring salary cuts to keep essential law enforcement.

Live nativity planned at Bailey Log House
In Bluefield Virginia a live nativity is set for Sunday from 7 to 4 p.m. at the Bailey Log House with the First United Methodist Church youth group performing near the stable. The event aims for an old fashioned pioneer Christmas inside the log house with singing, period costumes, and children stringing popcorn on a Christmas tree. The public is invited to participate as organizers strive for period authenticity.
