Miners across the coalfields were to vote on a contract ending a three week strike that idled about 120 000 workers. UMW leaders extended voting to Tuesday in locals needing more review, while snowstorms disrupted travel in several states and some ballots already returned in District 17.
West Virginia politics shift as Dillon, Democratic chairman, is chosen unopposed to succeed Howard W. Carson as Senate clerk. Brotherton reelected Senate president after a one candidate caucus, with Democrats holding 26 seats to 8. Dillon plans to resign Senate to take office January 8, creating a gubernatorial appointment vacancy.
Senator Edward M. Kennedy notes a sharp rise in US arms shipments to Turkey after Turkey's Cyprus invasion. He warns that heavy shipments likely continue despite law violations and stalled Cyprus negotiations. Atty. Gen. A Trans World Airlines 727 crashed on Mount Weather near a secret government complex in Virginia. All 93 aboard perished as rescuers battled sleet and darkness to recover remains. The flight from Indianapolis to Washington diverted to Dulles due to high winds.
The winter storm affects West Virginia and southwest Virginia with up to 20 inches in mountains and 8 to 15 inches in Bluefield area. Roads open but hazardous, power outages minor, speed limit reduced on WV Turnpike. Several counties close for weather and colleges cancel classes.
