In Covington Virginia Malcolm Wolfe 19 testified he meant only to frighten his father and did not aim at him when James Henry Lee Wolfe 60 was shot Oct 2 at their rural home. He fired after his father allegedly struck him with a gun and said the prosecution seeks no death penalty.
In Duluth Minnesota on December 1 a 13 month old boy named Bruce Kilpela wore an angel food cake pan on his head. Firemen used bolt cutters and tinsnips to remove the metal sombrero. the child was not hurt.
Navy diver Joseph R. Tallarico, 35, was rescued after nearly nine hours in 120 feet of water in the Patuxent River. Fifteen divers freed tangled lines from a sunken anchor and he was brought to the surface and placed in a decompression chamber in good condition. Tallarico, from Chicago, remained calm and robust, and his wife Carmela waited anxiously as he sipped hot coffee after the dive.
Former Truman administration officials Matthew J. Connelly and Theron Lamar Caudle were indicted for conspiring to defraud the government. The joint indictment names co-conspirators Ellis N. Slack and Irving Sachs, with bonds set at 5 000 for Connelly and Caudle. Schwimmer faces 30 000 bond.
Orson Litz of Charleston former West Virginia Supreme Court judge died in a Huntington hospital after about a month of illness. Born August 13, 1874 in Virginia, he served 14 years on the court, retired in 1938, and left a widow two sons and three daughters.
In Charleston a three year old girl Marsha Maynard spoke to her mother for the first time after undergoing 38 operations on her vocal cords to treat recurring growths. Doctors warn another operation may be needed for papillomas.
A three car collision on Route 2 near Cole's Sunbeam Bakery during Safe Driving Day injured three women. The crash occurred at 11:20 after a rain turned icy, sending Mrs. Donald Peters, Miss Mary Wall, and Mrs. Henderson to Bluefield Sanitarium with minor injuries. Wall suffered shock, Peters cuts, and Henderson a deep cut above her eye.
Richmond Virginia. House and Senate committees adjourned an eight hour public hearing on the constitutional convention bill. Fifty speakers voiced views from supporters opponents and neutrals while Collins Denny urged limited convention amendment to preserve school operations next fall.
In Richmond the Virginia House debated a bill to place a people’s vote on a constitutional convention aimed at enabling tuition grants for private non sectarian schools and an assignment plan to avoid enforced school integration. Debate lasted over two hours with no final vote, while Senators planned quick action once the House acts.
Harold Elder, a Green Bay Press Gazette artist, completed a Safe Driving Day cartoon and began delivery. While backing from a driveway his car collided with a neighbor’s vehicle. No injuries were reported.
