West Virginia Slow Growth for Small Businesses in 2002
Census data show West Virginia had one of the nation’s slowest small business growth rates in 2002 with 84 185 firms in the state having one or more owners but no paid employees, up 1.7 percent from 82 791 in 2001 while the national gain was 3.9 percent. WVU analyst Tom S. Witt notes the state was in a slow recovery from a recession.
