First recipient of self-contained artificial heart dies at 59
Robert Tools, the first person to receive a fully self-contained artificial heart, died at 59 from internal bleeding and organ failure after 151 days with the AbioCor device implanted at Jewish Hospital Louisville on July 2. Doctors said the death was not due to the device, blaming long standing health problems. Tools had congestive heart failure diabetes and kidney disease and underwent seven hours of surgery after a standing ovation from hospital staff.
