First recipient of self-contained artificial heart dies at 59
Robert Tools, the first person to receive a fully self contained AbioCor artificial heart, died at 59 in Louisville after 151 days with the device. Doctors cited internal bleeding and organ failure stemming from long standing health problems, not device failure, and praised Tools for pioneering the trial at Jewish Hospital on July 2.
