Randall Lee Smith Evidence Highlighted In Hearing

In Roanoke, fingerprint expert Richard Taylor tied Randall Lee Smith to a paperback book labeled Mt. Olive. Elmer Gist testified human Type B blood appeared on the book and shelter boards, while blood in a sample claimed to be Mountford’s was also Type B. Blood on clothing from Smith’s home was found but undeterminable. Judge Bondurant refused to admit Mountford’s blood type. Smith’s mother Loretta Smith testified he resided with her during the murders and left May 17 returning May 23. Evidence was seized June 8 and 9. Defense attempts to strike the bloodied items failed. The judge said Smith’s fingerprint on the book near the body strongly suggests probable cause.
