In Cape May New Jersey about 90 people competed in the 47th Annual Clamshell Pitching Championships run by the Clamshell Pitching Club. Participants aimed a shell into a hole 251 feet away to reach 21 points first. Winners were named in men’s and women’s categories along with doubles titles. Mixed doubles will finish Monday as high tide paused play.
Virginia families with kids under three can receive free car safety seats through a $1 million U S Department of Transportation grant administered by the state Highway Safety Office. Seats are loaned with no return requirement, open to all parents of children under three, under state law mandating use in cars.

Residents and local merchants supplied food to promote a positive neighborhood attitude.
Voters in Virginia will decide 45.2 million in general obligation bonds this November to rebuild aging mental health facilities. The package includes 472.4 million for education and 95.4 million for state parks. Supporters say the bonds will create thousands of jobs and fund upgrades to centers serving Southwest Virginia, including Southwest Virginia Community College and facilities in Marion Petersburg Staunton and Roanoke.
In Perrine Florida during Hurricane Andrew recovery pastors and churchgoers urged hope and thanks as volunteers and troops distributed tents water and food. Health officials warned of disease from compromised water and rotting food while heat swelled tempers. Army helicopters and Chinooks arrived with supplies as Gov. Lawton Chiles Rev. Jesse Jackson and Archbishop Edward McCarthy joined leaders at Homestead rallying spirits and coordination efforts.
Bluefield and Princeton police, Mercer County Sheriff's Department join a Hurricane Andrew disaster fund to help Dade County residents with food and supplies. A convoy to Florida will depart Friday with escorted transport, donations due by Thursday, as four disaster aid field offices operate and 160 miles of roads are cleared.
West Virginia recorded 2,663 crimes per 100 000 residents in 1991 up from 2 503 in 1990 while the state total rose 6.9 percent to 47 968 crimes. FBI data show the national rate up 1 percent to 5 898 per 100 000 with 3 percent more crimes nationwide. Governor Caperton credited a professional police force and vigilant citizens for WV’s low rate.
FBI statistics show West Virginia violent crime rate up 12.8 percent from 1990 to 1991, climbing from 169.3 to 191 per 100,000. The number of violent crimes increased 13.3 percent from 3,036 to 3,440, while property crimes rose 5.9 percent to 2,472.4 per 100,000.
Jim Hoge of Princeton diagnosed with multiple sclerosis plans a September 12 to 13 150 mile ride from Charleston to Parkersburg to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The 37 year old corrections officer at Bland Correctional Center hopes to collect 300 to 400 dollars in pledges. He will be joined by his wife Annette as a volunteer and invites donations by calling 898 2134 or mailing pledges to 1018 Hemlock Lane Poplar Grove Estates II Princeton WV 24740.
