Stocks close mixed amid profit-taking on Wall Street

Wall Street closed with mixed results as profit-taking trimmed gains in banks and pharmaceuticals while securities firms led the rally. The Dow slipped 37.74 to 11215.10, the Nasdaq rose 11.82 to 4082.41, and the S&P 500 fell 4.19 to 1509.90 as investors awaited Labor Day weekend. Citigroup and American Express eased on profit-taking, with trading buoyed by chatter Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette might be acquired by Credit Suisse.

July new home sales surge to seven year high
