Few Elderly Needy Use Discount Power Program
Appalachian Power reports only about 256 eligible elderly and needy residents in the Bluefield area take the statewide SSI energy discount. The plan, mandated by the Public Service Commission, lowers electric rates for SSI recipients whose income is under 264.70 monthly. Belchee notes roughly 1,400 WV SSI recipients get the break, saving about $3 monthly per customer, with concerns about cross subsidization among utility customers. Appalachian’s Bluefield district serves Mercer McDowell Wyoming Monroe and part of Raleigh counties.
