President Roosevelt stated that Congress failure to revise the neutrality act contributes to the European crisis. He called the omission a major factor influencing foreign capitals and noted that defense measures involve Panama Canal security and U S naval guards aboard ships transiting the canal.
Huntington August 29 AP John B Easton veteran West Virginia labor leader chosen by state CIO to serve a third term without opposition The convention urged two federal investigations into unemployment compensation and alleged special interests active in past elections The CIO called for inquiry by U S district attorney L A Via into use of federal funds and campaign funding practices in the department
The investigation cites A. A. Blalock saying former Waterloo resident DeWitt Clinton Cook, 20 and married, confessed to killing dancer Anya Sosoyeva on the Angeles City College campus and attacking two other women with a two by four. Cook reportedly claimed passion drove the assaults aimed at robbing purses. he allegedly attacked Delia Bogard and Myrtle Wagner, though his statements varied. Cook ascribed motive to uncontrollable impulse and robbery, while his wife Lorraine and mother denied knowledge of his actions as police pressed a large search near the Wagner residence.
New York officials ordered a fresh customs search of the German liner Bremen and the Normandie at Hudson river piers after a day-long hold. Collector Harry Durning said other European belligerent ships would be searched as delays pushed sailings of the Normandie Aquitania and Transylvania. About 100 customs men worked to finish before tomorrow night.
The Ohio bureau of unemployment compensation reviews a March to May coal mine shutdown, ruling it not a strike and granting miners unemployment benefits. The board cites lack of a basic agreement and operator resistance, with about 14,000 miners potentially affected.
In Jackson Mississippi Aug 29 former congressman Johnson backed by Bilbo led in early Mississippi gubernatorial primary returns. With 429 of 1660 precincts reporting Johnson had 22496 to Conner 20910 across 58 of 83 counties. In 119 precincts Johnson led with 4520 to Conner 4152.
Paris reports France accepts King Leopold III of Belgium and Queen Wilhelmina's mediation offer with the Netherlands to resolve the crisis. Hitler's assent remains a prerequisite and Britain's stance favors general negotiations on colonial materials and disarmament. Daladier Gamelin Blum discussed the situation as Senate committees prepare for meetings.
Camden N J August 29 Peter Shewchuk 21 former sweetheart of slain Wanda Dworecki was quoted by a detective as saying the girl's father a minister offered 100 but paid only fifty cents to kill her for insurance. The Rev Walter Dworecki was held on murder charges. He and the girl pleaded guilty but a New Jersey court prohibits such a plea for first 만나 at a preliminary Martane. Detectives said they were investigating Theresa Dworecki's death in July 1938. He said Shewchuk met Wanda at Sixth and Vine streets Philadelphia where the money was given. They walked to a secluded spot where Wanda was beaten and strangled. He returned to Camden the next day but got no more money. The Rev Dworecki hoped to collect insurance of 5 000 to 6 000.
Rome reports British attempts to press Hitler toward a peace settlement with Italy acting as go between. Mussolini advised moderation as war prep continues with air raid precautions in Italian cities and food control begins in Libya. Electric signs go dark in Rome and campaigns urge evacuation of nonessential city residents. Civilian traffic to be restricted to save fuel.
Berlin reports Hitler handed the British note to Neville Henderson in the chancellery after a 25 minute meeting. Hitler outlined Germany’s attitude orally while the content of the German reply remained secret. Optimism rose in Berlin that room existed for further negotiations on the Poland crisis.
Poles welcomed Prime Minister Chamberlain for reaffirming Britain’s pledge to Poland and the goal of peaceful settlement to avert future acquisitions. Officials denied mobilization plans amid tense German troop concentration near Slovakia and warned Slovakia against deception by its government. An explosion killed 17 and injured 30, with four suspects—two of them German citizens—among those detained.
Harrisburg reports indicate Republicans lead registration totals across 60 counties with a gain of 142,783 Republicans and 45,281 Democrats since the previous period. Current tallies show Republicans at 2,007,569 and Democrats at 1,402,022 after the latest counts.
The British cabinet was summoned to study Hitler's reply to Britain's note on Poland. Prime Minister Chamberlain and Foreign Secretary Halifax reviewed the message, which Berlin sources said could still lead to negotiations. Chamberlain warned war remained possible but stressed Britain would defend Poland and seek peace without weakening its lines.
London reports Chamberlain saying Britain is ready for any eventuality in defense of Poland or for negotiation if Hitler agrees. Berlin notes Hitler’s reply leaves door open to talks while rationing tightens. Warsaw says Poland will resist aggression with mobilization reaching over a million. Paris notes Belgium and Netherlands mediation talks but weak prospects, Rome cites British push for peace via Mussolini as air raid drills begin and food controls spread.
London reports a fascist style parade near Downing Street was halted as mounted police closed the street to spectators. About 100 officers dispersed the marchers amid banners and anti fascist slogans in the vicinity of Prime Minister Chamberlain's home.
The New York Herald Tribune reports a short wave interception of British admiralty orders directing British merchant vessels to proceed to British ports and leave Italian German and other waters. Mariners bound for Germany Danish or Dutch ports in or beyond the North Sea are to return or divert to Dutch ports north of latitude 50.
Paris reports Premier Edouard Daladier strain from weeks of French war preparations. He cited Hitler’s note to London and British-French resolve over Poland, saying in brief remarks that “we will know today where we stand” before returning home for rest.
