From the Savannah Morning News August 20. Curtis Britts of Graham saved his brother soldiers during a capsizing at Port Royal sound while a heavy sea and wind hindered escape. He is a son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Britts of Graham and has served in the US hospital corps in Washington DC and Fort Fremont. He is due home September 5 for a visit.
Several valuable dogs were killed by poison fed in bread and meat in Graham yards. Authorities believe outsiders are responsible for the wholesale slaughter outside the town limits and urge residents to heed the Virginia statute section 3724警.

Miss Nona Lee leaves tomorrow for Salem to visit relatives. Howard Meyers of Yukon is in the city. Mrs. W. T. Williams and children with sister Miss Howell spent yesterday at McDowell with Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Rawson. Miss Sue Hylton returned from Graham. Jairus Colling will go Wednesday to Asheville to visit Mrs. Collins, and with him Miss Wooder Miss Virginia and Master Jairus Collins return home. Miss Lillian Anderson of Freeman visits her sister Mrs. G. N. Harris in Keokee for several days. Mrs. J. Lee Clark and family are guests in Roanoke this week. H. W. Shields and family with Miss Hibbs leave yesterday for Philadelphia. Mrs. M. R. Walker visits her sister Mrs. Greer in Kenova. J. B. Peery J. C. Pack and Harry Bowen are at Ethel this week inspecting the Ethel mines. Mrs. W. W. Hamilton shops in Pocahontas yesterday.
A new extension from Rogersville to Maccasin Gap Virginia will host soon operated trains. It halves the Virginian first half coal haul to the Carolina and positions to compete with Cinefield route for Panama Canal coal trade and rising demand in Mexico. Clinchfield Route builds large steel pier at Charleston to handle coal traffic.
D D Wallace, a Stonecoal merchant, tells Huntington Advertiser there is coal enough beneath and above Wayne county to supply the world long term. He cites 33 feet of seams at 125 to 500 feet depth plus 17 feet above ground and a thick workable vein of stone coal. He notes potential for a 921 foot shaft to reach a six foot seam. Developments along the Big Sandy Norfolk and Western line are just beginning with plans for major operations within a year.

The trustee of the bankrupt estate of L. B. Reynolds offers the New Altamont Hotel furnishings equipment and lease on Princeton avenue Bluefield to June 26 1911. Private bids accepted until Sept 16 1910 at 2 pm and then public auction in front of the premises. Terms announced on or before sale day. John French trustee.

The Berwind White coal syndicate of Baltimore has completed the acquisition of 25 000 acres of fuel coal land in Harlan and Fletcher counties Kentucky along the Upper Cumberland River for 1 250 000 and plans multi million development spending to connect with the Wasioto and Black Mountain Railroad.
A productive region report notes G. B. Stevens of Graham gathered a number of strawberries in his Graham garden, described as a second crop. The next day Miss Helen Jennings picked a number of ripe cherries from a local cherry tree.
A cherry tree at W. A. Pankey’s yard on Scott street yields a second crop showing the area’s suitability for agriculture. Coffman farm’s east end apple trees bloomed twice with ripe fruit appearing amid blossoms in the same period, suggesting this region could support truck gardening and fruitful yields.
Information from the Queen and Crescent Route shows the last rail of the Holston River Railroad was completed yesterday, signaling a milestone for the Southern line. Officials anticipate improved coal movement and a boost to regional freight capacity.
