Soldier Curtis Britts Rescues Drowning Soldiers at Port Royal

From the Savannah Morning News August 20. Curtis Britts of Graham saved his brother soldiers during a capsizing at Port Royal sound while a heavy sea and wind hindered escape. He is a son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Britts of Graham and has served in the US hospital corps in Washington DC and Fort Fremont. He is due home September 5 for a visit.

Poisoned dog killings shock Graham residents

Several valuable dogs were killed by poison fed in bread and meat in Graham yards. Authorities believe outsiders are responsible for the wholesale slaughter outside the town limits and urge residents to heed the Virginia statute section 3724警.

Shields and family with Miss Hibbs leave yesterday for Philadelphia. Mrs. M. R. Walker visits her sister Mrs. Greer in Kenova. J. B. Peery J. C. Pack and Harry Bowen are at Ethel this week inspecting the Ethel mines. Mrs. W. W. Hamilton shops in Pocahontas yesterday.

A new extension from Rogersville to Maccasin Gap Virginia will host soon operated trains. It halves the Virginian first half coal haul to the Carolina and positions to compete with Cinefield route for Panama Canal coal trade and rising demand in Mexico. Wayne County coal promises world supply, expert says

D D Wallace, a Stonecoal merchant, tells Huntington Advertiser there is coal enough beneath and above Wayne county to supply the world long term. He cites 33 feet of seams at 125 to 500 feet depth plus 17 feet above ground and a thick workable vein of stone coal. He notes potential for a 921 foot shaft to reach a six foot seam. Developments along the Big Sandy Norfolk and Western line are just beginning with plans for major operations within a year.
