A feature on beef burgers with topping ideas from Reba Staggs of the National Livestock and Meat Board. Basic Beefburgers mix two pounds ground beef with salt and pepper, form eight patties, broil, then top with ketchup mustard and Worcestershire or try Sour Cream Blue Cheese topping or Corny Relish topping for eight burgers.
The Laura Wheeler Wesleyan Service Guild of Ashworth Memorial Methodist Church plans a September 5 meeting at the pastor’s home in Matoaka with devotions by Mrs Ray Williams and lesson by Mrs C S Butte Jr. Loyalty Day dinner set for September 4 at 7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.
Engagement and wedding photographs should be submitted to the Daily Telegraph within set time frames. A professional formal portrait in specified sizes must accompany the write up to the Society Editor. Submit by the Wednesday preceding the Sunday publication.
A Keystone A party for Rosemary Young marked her ninth birthday at her parents Mr and Mrs Harry Young Jr home in Crumpler. Guests enjoyed a white cake with pink and blue decorations and nine lighted candles. The group sang Happy Birthday after games and gift exchanges for Chet Greg Berry Anderson and Richard Hall. Mrs Young served refreshments to about 20 guests.
The Bluefield Trillium Garden Club outlined sending a CARE Kit to Korea at the August meeting. Officers appointed include Mrs. Robert Martin as president and Mrs. William Berdine as book committee chair. Members will meet September 16 at the Bland Street triangle for beautification work and plantings. The club also plans a December 4 Christmas tree entry at the Y Center and discusses landscaping in September. The Bluefield Garden Council noted the Greenbrier District meeting in Lewisburg on September 26 and distributed new yearbooks.
The Keystone Methodist Women's Society of Christian Service hosted its annual picnic at Rotary Ball Park Keystone for members, families, friends, and former members. About 40 persons attended including several former Bluefield area members and guests from Newport News Virginia and Long Beach California.
W. C. Groseclose was guest speaker at the August Laurel Garden Club meeting hosted by Miss Lina Light. He presented slides on the dam project, its functions, flood control, power production, coal use, and the recreation area. The group voted to enter the Sleigh Full of Christmas Trees show on December 4.
Mrs Henry Hopkins announced Bluefield FOE Auxiliary No 857 will pursue a new Mr and Mrs Award to honor couples who are good neighbors and citizens. The program is sponsored by Montreal based Grand President Mrs Yvonne Magnan.
NORTHFORK The August meeting of the Willing Workers Circle of the American Baptist Women featured a lunch and Madelyn Pearce hosted prayer of thanks. Assistant leader Dolly Wallace presided in the leader’s absence. Lois Graham opened with prayer.Mrs. Robert Lewis gave the devotion from Pioneer Girls Week and a New Testament meditation followed. Myrtle Davis gave a love gift meditation and the group closed with song and Psalm 23.
Northfork Assembly No. 33 of the Order of Rainbow for Girls attended the District No. 6 fall meeting at First Methodist Church in Princeton. Officers named included Patricia Orander and Roxanne Williams, with 27 members present. spring plans set for Bluefield.
Mrs. Charles Davenport will graduate today from the Onslow Technical Institute in Jacksonville North Carolina. Formerly Jewell Shanahan she is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Pat Shanahan of Boissevain Virginia. Her husband S Sgt Charles Davenport is near twenty years in the U S Marine Corps attached to the Helicopter Service in Viet Nam at Camp Lejeune. They reside in Jacksonville and have a son Morris known as Tinker stationed at Parris Island. Mrs Davenport plans to begin nursing work in Jacksonville.
Dr. and Mrs. R F Kelly of Blacksburg hosted a rehearsal dinner at Tow'n Country Restaurant Princeton after Melrose Presbyterian Church ceremony for Elizabeth Diane Arrington and Paul Kelly wed August 27. Attendees included family from Roanoke Athens Ravenswood and Wis with elders and grandchildren. Hong Kong airport expansion plans add 20 aircraft bays and two apron taxiways by 1971 to handle rising air traffic.
Bluefield Chapter No. 66 of the Order of the Eastern Star held Robert Morris Night with Worthy Matron Virginia Burgoyne and Worthy Patron Homer Tabor presiding. The event welcomed Past Patron Otey Bowyer and Lena Bowyer, plus Mr. and Mrs. Walter King and Bill Duggins. May Pace announced Ethel Little as grand representative to Colorado. An initiation practice is set for September 3 and initiation September 8.
The Arch B Lester relatives and friends will meet at City Park Bluefield on Sunday August 31 from 11 30 am to 6 pm for a picnic and family gathering. Bring a picnic basket and meet at the small pavilion by the pond.
Miss Ruth Mitchell, superintendent of nurses at Jackman Memorial Hospital Bilaspur India, will address First Christian Church Bluefield at 11 am Sunday August 31. A veteran nursing educator she helped develop post graduate nursing courses in Hindi and served with the Mid-India Board of Examiners of the Christian Medical Association of India.
