Telegraph Special Service reports in Zanzibar that the Sultan’s palace was bombarded after Said Khalid and his forces fled to the German consulate. Admiral Viewson says his squadron silenced the harbor guns after a bombardment. the corvette Thrush was sunk and Hammdson appointed Sultan. Enemy losses described as heavy.
At 1 30 yesterday a group of about twenty revolver and bomb armed men seized the Ottoman Bank, killing gendarmes and firing on police from the roof. The bank’s owner fled to tobacco syndicate quarters and violence spread as shops and bazaars were sacked. By 2 pm the bank remained in invaders control.
Dr Gallagher an Irish-American dynamiter, jailed 13 years ago, is freed from Portland prison and hurried to a railway station under tight guard. His destination remains secret as he is escorted to board the American liner at Southampton, bound for New York under Dr McBride.

At the Democratic Gold Standard Convention in the Academy of Music Richmond two hundred delegates attended. Alexander Hamilton of Petersburg was temporary chairman and sharply criticized the Chicago platform. Captain James Bumgardner of Staunton was chosen permanent chairman and the body endorsed the federal administration's credit efforts and the honor of the American people.
Indianapolis Aug 28 The city fills with railroad men for a mass meeting to be held Sunday expected to be one of the largest of its kind in the state. Grand officers from various brotherhoods will attend and federation will be debated with addresses from Governor Mathews, Mayor Taggart and others.
Desoto Missouri hosts a three day Sixth District Christian Endeavor Convention starting today with famed speakers and a large delegation. Organizers promise it will be the greatest gathering in the region since the 1890 international convention in St Louis.
Sea Girt New Jersey August 28 leading riflemen of the country arrive to compete next week in the sixth annual meeting of the New Jersey Rifle Association. Cash prizes total 1200 dollars with twenty two matches plus the Wimbledon cup hilltop trophy and interstate military match scheduled.

Acting Comptroller Coffin ordered the arrest of American National Bank of New Orleans president H Gardes and vice president Girault and a third party. They are charged with violations of federal statutes for misusing bank funds to buy stock, grant loans for personal gain, and false reports leading to asset losses. The losses fall on shareholders and creditors. arrests were supported by the Justice Department.
After yesterday's fire, J J Old urged town citizens to donate to Norfolk and Western fire department, proposing either a banquet or a hose fund. Assistant chief Monroe leads appeals to raise money for three new hose stations at city hall shops and the overhead bridge to protect all areas. Citizens and property owners are urged to contribute, with women urged to organize plans for the common good.
Waltham Massachusetts August 28 The O Maraltham Dial Company notified its workers that after tomorrow operations will cease indefinitely awaiting better times. The firm depends largely on watch factory activity for prosperity and the shutdown follows weakness in the watch trade. Demand for cyclometer dials and lapel motto buttons has fallen recently.
Ben Levine reports the national meeting of the German Soldiers Association will start on Sunday. The convention will try to secure endorsement for the gold standard but this effort is expected to meet strong opposition.
A fire at 2:30 a.m. gutted an empty West End residence owned by Stafford Wagner and spread to an adjacent Wagner property occupied by J T Palmer. Firefighters lacked enough hose to reach the scene, and only a calm night prevented wider destruction and displacement of numerous families.
A citizen laments the destruction of a city gate by the fire company after a fire. The gate, built to control access to the hose cart and city building, was torn apart when officials needed the cart. No arrests reported.
Rev H N Hawes will lead services at Po cahontas Presbyterian and Episcopal churches tomorrow. Rev J C Hayes of Covington Ky will preach at the Baptist church in the morning and evening with a baptism at the evening service. A Monday lecture titled A Lie in the Dark will be free to the public with a collection for the lecturer at the close.
