Admiral Viewson says his squadron silenced the harbor guns after a bombardment. the corvette Thrush was sunk and Hammdson appointed Sultan. Enemy losses described as heavy.

Armed Men Seize Ottoman Bank in Constantinople

At 1 30 yesterday a group of about twenty revolver and bomb armed men seized the Ottoman Bank, killing gendarmes and firing on police from the roof. The bank’s owner fled to tobacco syndicate quarters and violence spread as shops and bazaars were sacked. By 2 pm the bank remained in invaders control.

At the Democratic Gold Standard Convention in the Academy of Music Richmond two hundred delegates attended. Alexander Hamilton of Petersburg was temporary chairman and sharply criticized the Chicago platform. Captain James Bumgardner of Staunton was chosen permanent chairman and the body endorsed the federal administration's credit efforts and the honor of the American people.

New Orleans Bank Officers Arrested for Misappropriation

Acting Comptroller Coffin ordered the arrest of American National Bank of New Orleans president H Gardes and vice president Girault and a third party. They are charged with violations of federal statutes for misusing bank funds to buy stock, grant loans for personal gain, and false reports leading to asset losses. The losses fall on shareholders and creditors. arrests were supported by the Justice Department.

West End Fire Damages Unoccupied Dwelling Likely Arson

A fire at 2:30 a.m. gutted an empty West End residence owned by Stafford Wagner and spread to an adjacent Wagner property occupied by J T Palmer. Firefighters lacked enough hose to reach the scene, and only a calm night prevented wider destruction and displacement of numerous families.

A citizen laments the destruction of a city gate by the fire company after a fire. The gate, built to control access to the hose cart and city building, was torn apart when officials needed the cart. No arrests reported.
