Early day care exposure may lower asthma risk for kids

A University of Arizona study following about 1000 children over 15 years finds that infants who attend day care in the first six months or have two or more older siblings are roughly half as likely to have asthma by age 13. The research supports the hygiene theory that early exposure to germs helps develop the immune system. Dr. Leonard Bielory notes the trend toward weaker immune systems with overly sterile environments. The study adds to concerns about rising asthma rates and smaller families.

Healthier living linked to drop in heart disease among nurses

A long term Nurses Health Study of over 80 thousand nurses shows heart disease incidence fell from 1980 to 1994, with two thirds of the decline tied to healthier diet and smoking cessation. Increased estrogen use after menopause and better medical care also contributed, while rising overweight rates offset some gains.

Diabetes surges in 1990s tied to obesity and lifestyle

An AP report from Atlanta notes a 33 percent rise in diabetes nationwide between 1990 and 1998, with 30 to 39 year olds hit hardest. Obesity rates climbed from eight to nearly 20 percent, blamed on TV, fast food, stress, and more sedentary living.
