Steller to Run Matoaka School System Despite Board Ties

Matoaka Mercer County School Superintendent Arthur W. Steller told about 40 Kiwanis members that he and not the Board of Education will make major decisions for the county schools. He said his job is to run the system and promised cooperation with the five board members. Steller, hired July 1, has a two year contract at 50500 annually, makes him the highest paid county superintendent in West Virginia. He urged high expectations despite a budget deficit and detailed plans to reduce it while improving communication with parents, students, and the community. He cited his Shaker Heights background and stated the county has great potential and programs known statewide. Bluefield Fire Fee Hearing Draws 90 to 100 Protesters

About 90 to 100 residents attended a Bluefield public hearing on a proposed 6 cent per square foot fire protection fee. The Bluefield Board of Directors did not decide, planning to vote at next week’s meeting and was set for an informal session Thursday. The discussion noted constitutional questions on fee methods and potential alternatives, including a 10 percent cap and a per-vehicle charge of $10. Some residents could see an 80 percent reduction, depending on property value and ownership.
