Tech economy in Appalachian region grows slowly

A UNC Office of Economic Development report for the Appalachian Regional Commission finds the rural 13 state area spanning 200000 square miles has a small tech sector that grew two thirds as fast as the overall economy from 1989 to 1998. It cites shortages of entrepreneurs scientists and trained staff and notes regional gaps in university programs and federal research grants. The study highlights fewer degrees in industrial engineering and computer science at regional colleges and two-year schools and warns most growth will rely on information technology and biotechnology.
