Secretary Baker and General March discuss a national draft plan allocating youths aged 18 to 45 into class one for spring call ups. The "work or fight" amendment is deemed consistent with current policy, with calls possibly lasting beyond September and a goal to complete nation wide classification by January 1.
Washington reported that Secretary Baker told Senator Chamberlain the War Department would keep existing regulations for married men. Chamberlain had asked if deferred classification for married men was planned, noting opposition from many senators to lowering the draft age to eighteen.
A War Department committee proposes continuing education and military training for youths aged eighteen to twenty one who are registered but awaiting call to service. A German submarine was sunk in a running battle with a British tank steamer about three hundred miles northeast of Nantucket. The tanker’s crew reported two submarine shots caused no damage while the tanker fired twenty seven rounds, with flames seen from the sub before it sank a few minutes later.

A Huff Andrews and Thomas delivery truck ran down Washington street in south Bluefield Sunday afternoon crashing through a fence into Dr. C. M. Scott's yard and overturning. Mrs. W. J. Schoonover suffered a fractured skull and broken ribs along with other injuries. Mrs Gertrud McGee broke an arm and bruises, Mrs Doak Nash lightly hurt. Chauffeur G. W. Roop and Mr. Schoonover sustained injuries while eight others remained with the vehicle until it struck the tree. All were taken to St Luke’s hospital for treatment and Mrs Schoonover showed signs of recovery by night.
Berlin asserts French attacks between the Oise and Aisne failed while Paris cites penetration of the Lassigny environs. The latest statements emphasize German positions held on three sectors amid weakening defenses and growing air activity in the region.
Coast guards from Cleveland and other Lake Erie ports searched for the fishing launch Grestest missing for over eighteen hours. Commanded by Captain William Young the craft carried four aboard including one passenger from Erie Virginia and four crew. it left yesterday amid heavy seas and strong north winds with no trace found to date.
Paris reports French forces north of the Oise have advanced to the western outskirts of Lassigny and moved toward Thiescourt wood. They seized Pimprez on the Noyon to Pigne road and captured Morsain northwest of Soissons with 2,200 Germans taken prisoner.
