The West Virginia Poll finds many residents losing faith in President Bush amid economic worries and criticism of policy. Voters express calls for changes, including questions about Vice President Dan Quayle and campaign promises.
In light of recent rain motorists are urged to use headlights in fog smoke rain or poor visibility. State Police official Cpl McCarty notes enforcement will begin soon with fines up to 100 dollars at magistrate discretion. Princeton police report drivers in downpours not using headlights.
On today’s calendar at noon the Cardinal States Pioneer chapter of the Telephone Pioneers will meet at Western Sizzlin in Bluefield Virginia. At 3:30 p.m. the Bluestone Visitors and Convention Center regular monthly board meeting will be held in the second floor conference room of the Bluefield Area Arts and Crafts Center. An executive committee will begin at 2:45 p.m. A fuller calendar is on page A-10.

McDowell County plans a 1.5 million FHA compliant project by T M Associates on the old Starland Theater site in Big Four. The plan includes 38 elderly and 39 family apartments in a three story building and five two story buildings, with construction likely in spring 1993. A Kmart shopping center is also planned for 1993 adjacent to the same community, due to Route 52 traffic and local need.
Ronald Reagan opened the Republican National Convention with a sharp anti-Democrat barrage. He branded Bill Clinton a draft dodger and praised Bush, asserting the nation needs change and a steady hand for the 90s. Patrick Buchanan joined with bipartisan support for Bush, while the convention pushed a platform including an abortion ban and renewed defense emphasis.
Welch man Carl Mullins, 47, died at the scene of a Monday morning two vehicle crash on Route 52 near Rodgerfield. Morning rain and slick roads contributed as Mullins attempted to pass a coal truck, lost control, and hydroplaned into the rear of the truck. The truck driver was treated and released, with no charges filed as investigators continue.
State Superintendent Henry Marockie told 350 Bluefield teachers that the second phase of a program will provide IBM microcomputers to all second to fourth grade classrooms this school year. He noted $7.5 million in state and lottery funding has been allocated and that devices should be ready for use by late September.
Dr. Ralph Bell an associate evangelist with the Billy Graham Crusades spoke at Hunnicutt Stadium near Princeton Senior High School. He urged exposing people to the Gospel amid AIDS hate war and fading family values saying Christians stand out by going upstream. The Crusade continues tonight at 7 with Buddy Greene and services at 7:30 at the stadium barrier.
