Mrs May Hanson 38 a farm woman was charged with murder by burning in Rockford Illinois for the death of her divorced husband Earl Hanson a factory executive who burned to death in his car beside the Hanson farm. A warrant noted the act was committed by the agency of gasoline and a match. Hanson said she knew nothing of the killing.
Governor Kump and federal official Harry Hopkins announce a satisfactory understanding for cooperative relief financing. Federal funds will be released to West Virginia immediately as talks continue, with the state and local units contributing from existing funds.
Cuba's exiled former president Gerardo Machado orders his family to stay in Philadelphia while he joins them to finalize their plan to settle permanently in the United States. Daniel Crawford Jr. confirms the Machado clan is lodging at a local hotel as they await arrangements.
The Agriculture Department outlined plans for subsidized wheat exports below the American price and signaled possible extra processing taxes on wheat and cotton. Virginia lawmakers began an extraordinary session in Richmond to fast track legislation on legal beer 3.2 percent and a referendum on state and federal prohibition. Governor Pollard delivered a 7500 word message backing the measures and calling for a public works agenda.
Missouri dry leaders prepared a move to question the repeal ballot before the U.S. Supreme Court. Mrs. Nellie G. Burger of the WTA said the Weeks bill violates Missouri law and aims to block or delay the election. Matilda Roberts was grilled again in Grundy jail as authorities seek motive for a suspected fourth man in the Grundy area killings. Jim Roberts, her brother, visited during questioning while Buchanan county authorities pursue a lead held by a feared jealous lover theory.
Albert Goldstein, 24, a Vineland drugstore clerk, was arrested by federal agents for writing a letter threatening to kidnap or kill the daughter of a wealthy grain merchant he had once served. He claimed it was a joke and was held on $25,000 bail for the federal grand jury. The threat targeted Herman Schwartz’s 11 month old daughter Shirley.
Gene Johnson, allied with the Wilbur Underhill gang, was fatally wounded and his wife Jewell Johnson shot in the arm when a 20 man posse opened fire on the Johnson farm near Siloam Springs Arkansas. Leroy Wright is believed wounded and escaped during the gun battle.
Shelbyville Tennessee August 17 Thomas W Wordeagle charged with taking part in the kidnaping of Claude Boyd an 88 year old man at Hopkinsville Kentucky on the night of August 9 was held in 100000 bond today by U S Commissioner Edwin T Nance to await action by the federal grand jury
Washington reports the Public Works Administration approved 65 million dollars to speed job creation through construction. Major allocations include 44.2 million for a tri borough bridge project in New York, 11.5 million for 29 public buildings across 22 states, and about 10 million for initial housing projects to clear slums. The cabinet set wage floors by zone with Southern, Central, and Northern bands for skilled and unskilled labor.
