The Consumer Price Index rose 0.2 percent in July, with the core rate up 0.2 percent as gasoline prices eased after June spikes. A separate report showed housing construction plunging in July, potentially prompting the Fed to keep rates unchanged as it weighs the impact of prior hikes. Stock prices mixed as Dow slips on retail selloff
New York AP reports stock prices were mixed on Wednesday as investors weighed modest inflation and cooling growth. The Dow fell 58.61 to 11008.39 while the S&P 500 declined 7.33 to 1477.10 and the Nasdaq rose 1.13 to 3852.79. Retail shares such as Home Depot and Walmart dragged the Dow as fears of slower consumer spending lingered amid Fed cooling policy. An economist notes slower growth could ease rate hike pressure.
