JIM DANDY registers a victory over Gallant Fox and another Fox in a tilt with Bluefield State Liners against Berwind Cavaliers at Glenwood. OU Gehrig remains two points ahead of Al Simmons for the American League batting crown per official averages released last night.
In a stunning upset at Saratoga, Jim Dandy ridden by F Baker defies 100 to 1 odds to beat Gallant Fox and Whichone by six lengths amid 40,000 fans including Governor Roosevelt. The victory awards $27,500 as Gallant Fox tires in the mud to finish second. Whichone fades lame.
Claude Sumpter posted the high average at the Bluefield Gun Club weekly shoot yesterday afternoon. He broke 46 of 50 birds while Jim Hawley finished second with 45.
Gehrig regains a .383 average to lead AL batting with .381 by week’s end. He also tops hits with 167 and total bases at 323 and 139 RBIs. Ruth adds 43 homers. Grove leads Athletics and the circuit with 19 wins and 144 strikeouts.
Lady Broadcast, a speedy four year old filly owned by Rogers Caldwell of Nashville, won the Chicago business men's handicap at Hawthorne before 20 000 race fans. My Dandy finished second with Brown Wisdom, Islam and others in the field. Caldwell collected 8750 in added money and My Dandy earned 2000 for second. Suitor won the Windy City claiming race at a mile and sixteenths with Miss Beas second and Zida third. Suitor paid 10 28 to win.
Bill Terry led the National League with three hits in nine at bats but his average slipped to .410. Babe Herman stayed at .400 with two hits in six, while Chuck Klein dropped to .395 after eight plate appearances. In the American League Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig faded with sub .285 marks as Phil, Simmons, and others also moved.
Grove the star pitcher of the Athletics earned his twentieth win of the season as Philadelphia defeated the St. Louis Browns 4 to 2 to open a three game series. Coffman threatened early but Grove and key hits from Haas McNair and Cochrane sealed the win with a seventh inning rally.
Washington beat Detroit 3 to 1 as Jones pitched well until eighth inning relief. West drove in all Washington runs with three singles and a triple, Hadley shut down Detroit late, Manush made a running catch to end Detroit's sixth with bases loaded. Uhle took the loss for Detroit while Jones earned the win for Washington.
The Pittsburgh Pirates expanded their pitching roster by adding three youth arms in a week. J N Bivin from Davenport Mississippi Valley league is 20 and owns a 6 8 record this season. Charley Wood debuted for Pittsburgh against Brooklyn after being acquired from Wichita Western league. Vernon Kennedy arrives from Burlington Mississippi Valley league as the third recruit.

Tony Pouladish of Zeigler Illinois died instantly after his speeding car overturned on the southeast curve of a half mile dirt track in New Harmony Indiana during a race. He suffered a broken neck and was dead on arrival. Pouladish was an amateur driver in the fifth race of his career.
Mercedes Gleitz, a young London swimmer and stenographer, swam the Hellespont at its broadest point in 2 hours and 45 minutes. After seven failed attempts at the English Channel in October 1927 she finally completed the crossing from Asiatic to European shores, was greeted by villagers of Tchanak on landing.
The Cubs extend control of the National League race as injury setbacks shake the lineup. Charley Grimm is out with a four inch gash after an incident with Frank O Doul of the Phillies. Charlie Tolson fills in at first base while Grimm recovers.
Oody English homered in the second game with a man on in the ninth to tie the score and prevent defeat as Chicago salvaged a split against Philadelphia after winning the opener.
New York star Bill Terry leads NL batting at .409 with Babe Herman and Chuck Klein tied for hits at 185. Klein also tops scoring with 116 and RBIs at 125 as Hack Wilson powers Chicago with 40 homers. Giants top team batting, Cincinnati strong in fielding, Bob Osborne leads NL pitchers with 9 wins.
Yesterday’s results show Chicago 10 Philadelphia 3 and New York 9 Cincinnati 1 2 with Brooklyn 7 Pittsburgh 5 and Boston 6 St Louis 5. Tonight Philadelphia visits Chicago New York plays St Louis Boston travels to Cincinnati with others not scheduled.

Margaret Carspreken of Morgantown West Virginia won the women s singles 6 0 6 3, then joined Mariam Sullivan of Pittsburgh to win the women s doubles 6 4.
At Conneaut Lake Pa August 16 the opening day of the Penn Ohio regatta attracted a large crowd. Finals set for tomorrow. Winners included Cliff Pickard Jamestown NY and Ed Schrader Youngstown OH with multiple classes and divisions. R G Fry Oil City rescued by Red Cross boat after a capsized craft. John Hoffetetter Erie tumbled into the lake while unloading his motor.
Dallas officials announce outfielder Jim Moore sold to the Philadelphia Athletics for about 15000 dollars and a player. Moore failed to win a berth with the Chicago White Sox last spring after a training camp inquiry and was returned to Dallas.
