Fidrych's Tigers Career Likely Near End At 27
DETROIT AP Mark The Bird Fidrych, famed rookie of 1976, turns 27 Friday and will not return to the Detroit Tigers this season. Jim Campbell, the GM, says Fidrych is likely finished with the club, with several minor leaguers to be promoted in September. Fidrych has battled arm problems, posting a 6 2 record at Evansville AAA this year and an ERA of 5.66 through 70 innings. He could be kept in Evansville if the team protects him, otherwise he may seek free agency. Campbell notes Fidrych lacks his former velocity and control, though a future return by someone like Luis Tiant offers a glimmer of hope.
