Reagan optimistic on autumn talks with Soviets

Reagan urges Senate to pass Contra aid package

Reagan urged quick Senate passage of a 100 million dollar aid package for the Contra rebels in Nicaragua. State OKs recreation site funds

BLUEFIELD Virginia towns officials report a state grant of 200000 dollars toward an all purpose outdoor recreation center. The city must raise 400000 locally to trigger the 50 percent match and a state funded road access may follow after land purchase and initial construction. The plan covers 57 acres beyond the industrial park with 27 acres bought for about 400000 dollars. the rest donated by the St Clair family. Additional 100000 dollars will fund a shelter playground fields and facilities. Groundbreaking date not set. Bank funds and borrowing will finance remaining costs.

Four states seek theft suspects for questioning

Three South Carolina residents arrested on theft charges in Virginia are sought by investigators from West Virginia Georgia and two Virginia counties to determine links to similar thefts. Authorities in Tennessee have begun inquiries as well.

Sri Lankans Adrift Off Newfoundland Seek Refugee Status

A group of 152 Sri Lankans, including 144 men 3 women and 5 children, rescued from two lifeboats southeast of Newfoundland, paid 3000 to 5000 dollars each to be smuggled into Canada. They seek refugee classification and were brought to St. John’s aboard the Leonard J Crowley after exposure injuries. Police say the Tamils fled persecution in Sri Lanka and may have boarded a freighter off India on July 7.
