The stage is set for today’s vote on a $100 million aid package for Nicaragua’s Contras, a measure attracting attention across the Capitol. Supporters argue it curbs communist influence while opponents call for alternative policies and oversight.
President Reagan, returning from Moscow, voiced optimism about a productive autumn summit as arms talks resume. He gave few details on the new round, cited Kremlin troubles, and noted Gorbachev faces economic and reactor crisis pressures. He also discussed South Africa sanctions and the prospect of aiding ending apartheid if requested.
Reagan urged quick Senate passage of a 100 million dollar aid package for the Contra rebels in Nicaragua. He outlined farm program spending as a means to ease farmers toward self sufficiency and defended grain sales to the Soviet Union as aid to U.S. farmers. He defended voluntary drug testing for federal workers with no job loss threat and dismissed endorsing Lyndon LaRouche’s views.

BLUEFIELD Virginia towns officials report a state grant of 200000 dollars toward an all purpose outdoor recreation center. The city must raise 400000 locally to trigger the 50 percent match and a state funded road access may follow after land purchase and initial construction. The plan covers 57 acres beyond the industrial park with 27 acres bought for about 400000 dollars. the rest donated by the St Clair family. Additional 100000 dollars will fund a shelter playground fields and facilities. Groundbreaking date not set. Bank funds and borrowing will finance remaining costs.
Children at Center Court in Mercer Mall join Sesame Street star Roscoe Orman, aka Gordon, in a sing along to the tune I've got two eyes, part of a daytime mall event featuring familiar TV characters and cheerful participation by young attendees.
Mercer County Airport will stay open to Sept 2 due to a runway paving project. Airport Authority Chairman Ron Satterfield says delays are likely. Piedmont Commuter reports July boardings of 1 050, up 243 from June, with Bluefield and Beckley seeing increases. Two extra Charlotte nonstops added as demand rises.
Three South Carolina residents arrested on theft charges in Virginia are sought by investigators from West Virginia Georgia and two Virginia counties to determine links to similar thefts. Authorities in Tennessee have begun inquiries as well.
A group of 152 Sri Lankans, including 144 men 3 women and 5 children, rescued from two lifeboats southeast of Newfoundland, paid 3000 to 5000 dollars each to be smuggled into Canada. They seek refugee classification and were brought to St. John’s aboard the Leonard J Crowley after exposure injuries. Police say the Tamils fled persecution in Sri Lanka and may have boarded a freighter off India on July 7.
