In Coachella California a car fleeing Border Patrol ran a stop sign and was hit by a hay truck killing 11 men and boys. Ten died at the scene and one died later at a Palm Springs hospital. The vehicle carried many people likely illegal immigrants and was linked to smuggling. The driver of the truck Ralph Jacquez 38 of Ontario was not harmed. The victims appeared to be Hispanic possibly farmworkers and were found mostly inside a 1974 Ford Galaxy after a chase reaching 100 mph. The crash occurred on Highway 86 near Salton City and Highway 195 near Coachella. The incident raises toll totals on Riverside and Imperial county highways since 1980.
