Shifting earth blamed for pipeline blast in West Virginia
In Charleston an AP report says shifting earth is blamed for a 30 inch natural gas line break and explosion near the Kanawha Putnam county line. The blast sent flames high into the air, caused evacuations, and shut a 12 mile section of the line serving Kanawha and Putnam counties. Columbia Gas Transmission cites underground movement as the root cause after initial inspections found no rust. No injuries were reported and repairs include replacing about 1000 feet of steel pipe and inspecting the rest of the line. The line carries 600 million cubic feet daily from a compressor in Ceredo to Lanham and has faced scrutiny over corrosion monitoring. since 1999 the company has paid nearly 600,000 in penalties.
