UN Assembly May Gather If Crisis Worsens

U N Secretary General Trygve Lie said the 59 nation General Assembly could be convened on 24 hours notice for any new aggression if the Security Council cannot act. He noted the Dominican Republic urged lifting the Madrid envoy ban as its session opens Sept. 19.

China Reds Shell British Steamer Hang sang

Chinese Communist shore guns fired on the British steamer Hang sang near Lema island 15 miles from Hong Kong, wounding two officers and slightly damaging the ship. A five inch shell that failed to explode was removed later. Wounded are Alexander Brown and A A Nelson. captain is L W Harrison. The Steel Rover also took splinter damage nearby.

Philippines Offer 5 000 Men For Korea

President Elpidio Quirino announced that the Philippines would send 5,000 fully equipped infantry at its own expense to fight under the United Nations banner in Korea or wherever needed. Congress approved dispatch at Philippines expense, with troops available for use anywhere amid threats to free peoples.

Marines Plan Full Call Up Of Reserve Forces

The Marine Corps announced plans to mobilize all 80,000 volunteer reserves bringing active strength to about 200,000. Fifty thousand reserves to report for active duty between Aug. 15 and Oct. 31, with 30,000 more mobilized. Some women reserves to be called up, exact numbers undecided. Also more organized air reserve units to be recalled. Coast Guard seeks re enlistments 17 to 45 in reserves with consent rule. West Virginia Reserve Call May Be Light

West Virginia reservists to be called may be fewer than expected due to heavy enlistments. Col. A R Reeves says calls fill vacancies in units already ordered to active duty and quotas will be set by job specialty across the state after August 15. Only nonunit reservists will be mobilized with priorities by age dependents and fitness.

Washington reports 2,668 Americans killed wounded or missing in Korea through Aug 6, with 168 listed as killed. Army casualties dominate totals at 2,616 with 153 killed and 1,590 wounded. Air force total 50 with 14 killed and 34 missing. Navy totals 2 with 1 killed and 1 missing.

Driver dies after permit denial in Iowa crash

Carroll P. Hedges, 25, was killed when his car skidded into a ditch hours after a renewal permit was refused due to defective vision. His two year old son, who was in the car, was thrown clear and suffered only a minor facial cut, according to state highway patrol.
