Obituary notes Mrs Sallie Scanland nee Harley born July 28 1832 died Aug 5 1902 aged 70 years 8 days. She married Nathan Scanland Nov 21 1867 and had four children. A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church she endured illness with Christian patience. Survived by husband and four children. S P Koon.

The Sandy Valley and Elkhorn railroad is chartered to build a fifty six mile line from the mouth of Shelby creek on Big Sandy to the Cumberland mountain coal fields. Backed by Northern Coal and Coke Company interests and Cincinnati Ashland capital, the project aims for first class construction with ninety pound rails at an estimated cost of 1.5 million dollars. Construction is expected to begin at once and finish soon.
Morgantown West Virginia August 7 after five years detectives have run down St Louis Lindsay Keener once of this place accused of defrauding cattle growers of the county of 10600 He was identified by Garrison McClure and Julian Fleming of Morganton who went to St Louis at officers request Victims exceed twenty and several criminal charges are pending in this and other counties He was a prominent family member and trusted business man The only reply he gave was a letter saying thieves stole the money on the train.
Dr. R. H. Lee aged seventy two died suddenly this morning in Charleston. His wife was buried one week ago. He was a longtime business and political figure and a Republican candidate for state senator in 1890 against Gen. C. C. Watts. He served in the Mexican war, was a Civil War captain, and state commander of the G A R in 1894.

New York August 7 A B Youngson assistant grand chief of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers arrived from Cleveland today and met a committee representing the local division. They dispute conditions with the Manhattan Elevated Railroad Company saying engineers and motormen on the electric lines are overworked and threaten a city wide strike impacting the Gould lines if demands are not met.

At a Buchanan county Virginia Republican convention the resolutions unanimously reaffirmed allegiance to the National Republican platform. They criticized Virginia’s dominant party and registration board members Alexander Runyons and Will Horton as dishonest, urging Republicans to refrain from voting this fall to prevent what they call perjury and vote theft by those officials.
