Ford Motor Co. boosted prices on all but one model by 75 dollars, marking the second rise since the 1949 model launch. The six cylinder business coupe was cut 5 dollars. The increases reflect higher material and labor costs and limited production due to shortages.
Washington on August 5, John Santosemma of Bradbury Heights Maryland faced a $50 penalty for violating industrial safety and health rules. The case centered on using a gusset and a bubbler, devices to strengthen scaffolds and provide portable drinking water, which were reportedly not used in his job as a plastering contractor.
In Miami Florida a navy R4D aircraft and a Stearman trainer collided near Perry Field killing at least 41 people. The Stearman occupants bailed out unhurt while the navy crew tried to regain control before crashing into a field. Students and witnesses described the midair impact and subsequent plunge.
President Truman told about 100 boys from 45 posts at the third annual American Legion boys forum that there is nothing wrong with the younger generation and he is willing to leave the future of the nation in the hands of its boys. He urged them they must keep the United States on a firm footing and noted their study in government shows they are equal to the task.

Earl Shaffer of York Pennsylvania reached Mt Katahdin completing what he calls the Appalachian trail hike from Georgia to Maine. He left Oglethorpe Georgia on April 4 averaging about 17 miles daily and survived on lean-tos corn bread and a light pack during the 2000 mile trek.
Moscow Aug 5 Western envoys Brit ish and French conferred with U S ambassador Walter Bedell Smith after three power talks with Stalin. A second meeting with the Soviet leader was considered possible as probes on Berlin traffic and east‑west Germany issues followed Monday night discussions. The exact replies from Washington London Paris remained guarded.
In Tennessee a Crump-backed slate lagged as ballots remained unofficial after a deadly ambush in Copper Basin Pelk county near McMinn county, where violence hit in the August 1 1946 election. Senate contenders Kefauver and Stewart clashed neck and neck with Mitchell trailing, as early returns from 1,458 of 2,300 precincts showed Kefauver 77,025 Mitchell 39,352 Stewart 78,789.

Washington August 5 Congress approved a 65 million dollar loan to the United Nations to build a New York City headquarters. President Truman had urged the move in the special session. the House passed it 614 to 27 after Senate approval earlier. The measure enables 25 million from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to start construction on the UN Dome.
Charles Dennis complained to the sheriff that a neighbor took the hole he dug for a mailbox. Dennis had placed a post and painted the mailbox, then found the neighbor's post with a mailbox in the same hole. Sheriff Robinson said the ground belonged to neither party. He suggested someone dig a new hole.

The wholesale price index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics rose fractionally for the week ended July 31. Iron and steel products surged while farm products and foods fell. The index reached 168.3 percent of the 1926 average, just below the 168.9 high set in the July 17 week. farm products and foods declined 1.2 percent and 1.4 percent respectively in that period.

Charleston notes that used taxicabs fetch more than their original cost, prompting a public service commission order. Until further notice, income from selling used cabs is treated as a source of revenue rather than a loss in calculating replacement equipment allowances.

Smith enlisted in the WAC six years ago and is a Fort Des Moines/Owens class II graduate and a DePauw University alumna.
Un-American Activities Committee announced a mystery witness may crack the Soviet spy case. Acting Chairman Mundt said a subcommittee will interview the witness. McDowell alleged 1300 pounds of uranium shipments to Russia during wartime. President Truman called the hearings a red herring. Hiss denied communist ties. Remington and Wallace links were discussed.
Honolulu reports former New York Daily Worker editor Budenz testified in a Hawaii school board hearing on suspensions of two teachers, Dr. and Mrs. John E. Reinecke, amid claims the U.S. Communist Party ordered preparations for civil war if the United States joined Britain in World War II. Budenz attributed the instruction to Eugene Dennis and Moscow, suggesting the party line urged transforming the imperial war into a civil conflict in the event of U.S. entry.
