The move aims to save money and stabilize the budget and officials say county school and city bodies can also buy through the agency. Anchorage Alaska August 5 A seaplane carrying gasoline to Pilot Harry Blunt forced down near Cook Inlet with the appendicitis stricken Henry Looff five son of a former fisheries warden The boy was being rushed from Lazy Bay to a hospital 400 miles away when fog and low fuel forced the crash Blunt had been summoned from here by wireless message from Kodiak to Seattle to Anchorage A Seattle physician through two amateur wireless operators diagnosed the boy and the U S signal corps relayed a plea for the seaplane to bring him for operation.
North Sutton New Hampshire August 5 state guardsmen joined state motor vehicle inspectors and deputy sheriffs to patrol Camp Bueno a private girls camp following a threat to kidnap a child believed to be the daughter of a Pennsylvania Railroad vice president living in Philadelphia authorities kept the child’s identity confidential.
Chicago August 5 Undaunted by the near miss Lieut Commdr T G W Settle vows to try again after a stratosphere ascent from Soldier Field ended with a malfunction. The balloon rose with cheering crowds then drifted over the loop and landed in a railroad yard a faulty gas valve caused the brief failure. Settle slept through the morning then expressed resolve to attempt another ascent before season end.
Two French aviators Lieut Maurice Rossi and Paul Codes escape New York with 1700 gallons of fuel in Floyd Bennett field aiming to surpass a 5340 mile nonstop record. They plan a great circle route toward India or Persia with weather likely to alter course.
Washington reports Hugh S Johnson advances a broad plan to bring all industries under wage and hour codes. Three more industries win immediate code effect for higher wages and shorter hours including electric power and meat packing. Johnson challenges interpretations of Roosevelt s reemployment agreement while urging business and labor to avoid strikes during the national emergency. Five men were shot to death and six wounded in Kentucky election clashes with National Guard on duty in Harlan county. Victims include Robert Roark, Joe Lee, and Theodores Middleton, a Republican sheriff candidate. Clay and Breathitt counties also saw fatalities, with multiple shootings tied to post election tensions and postponed November election conflicts.

Edgar F. Dickson, secretary to Governor Kump, was named secretary of the road commission succeeding George KE. White. The appointment takes effect August 7 and White will stay on for an indeterminate period. Commissioner Bailey praised Dickson’s business sense and enthusiasm for the new road law as he takes charge of the county-district highway system. Dickson, from Monroe County, is a former Democratic county chairman.
President Roosevelt forms a seven member tribunal led by Senator Wagner to preserve industrial peace during recovery programs. The board includes William Green Leo Wolman John Lewis Walter Teagle Gerald Swope and Louis Kirstein to adjudicate disputes under reemployment agreements and mining code provisions.
