Paris reports the German crown prince committed 40 divisions totaling 635000 men between the Aisne and Marne since July 15 while forty divisions 40000 men fought at Champagne. The front’s shortening saved about ten divisions 15000 men. Names of American soldiers fallen in the great drive are beginning to arrive from overseas.
Allied forces report gains across the Vesle river from Soissons toward Rheims with French and American units extending ground and repelling German counterattacks. Prussian Guards and Bavarians suffer heavy losses as German front trembles from Amiens to Ypres. Submarine activity increases with the Warilda torpedoed off Britain and other ships sunk near Virginia and Nova Scotia.
The British ship Warilda was torpedoed early Saturday, yielding 105 to 130 dead and many wounded. About 659 survivors reached safety, with seven Americans among the sick and injured aboard. Rescue station reports describe a grim scene in the flooded ward room and heroic efforts by crew and nurses.
Washington Aug 5 The manpower bill to require registration of men aged eighteen to forty five for military service was introduced in both chambers. General Crowder urged immediate enactment and set September 5 as registration day for about 13 million nationwide. Estimates show 601,286 would be eligible for class one, with 8,101,771 to register ages eighteen to twenty and 1,787,609 eligible for class one.
Secretary of War Baker, traveling en route to Leavenworth and Newton, said the war department aims to keep at least one million men in U S training in camps as long as the war lasts. He put current training at 1 5 million and cautioned that the tide of battle in the Aisne Warne sector shows the war is just beginning.
Aug 5 dispatch cites official figures of 12 000 German captives in Champagne while rumors say 60 000 Germans and 800 guns lost on the Allied front. A German prisoner notes food shortages and morale deterioration as Petain forces push toward Soissons and Rheims, with British fronts observing orderly advance along forty miles of front.
Berlin reports Allied attacks north of Albert and on both sides of the Somme were repulsed by German forces. Prisoners were taken southwest of Montdidier in minor actions. Vesle artillery activity increased and forefield engagements occurred south of Conde and west of Reims. After warding off a strong enemy attack, rear guards withdrew to the north of the Vesle near Fismes.

Britain marks the fourth anniversary of war with Premier Lloyd George urging the empire to hold fast for victory. He warns against delaying peace, cites German aggression, and praises allied bravery while warning of renewed efforts by Prussia to prolong militarism.
London reported a dramatic German withdrawal as the entire salient line collapsed in retreat. Observers noted misty weather and visible movements with soldiers abandoning positions while a machine gun and officer supervised destruction of damp in a small group.
German submarines are active at two Atlantic seaboard points one off Virginia and another in Canadian waters. The navy reports the steamer Jennings sunk and crews landed at Norfolk, with a second sub boat missing. Mines of foreign manufacture believed to have been sown near Long Island after the San Diego sinking. The Canadian raid adds five ships to the toll, including American and Nova Scotia vessels.
The War Department released 706 American casualties from the Marne drive with 159 killed in action and 80 died of wounds in the first list. A second list shows 256 killed in action and 48 died of wounds, with many names including Howard McCall and George Bohlman, among others. Acting Secretary Crowell urged no guessing on totals.
