Cuban residents in New York overwhelmingly back the Republican ticket. They shifted from Democrats due to Cuba policy under Cleveland and the Chicago platform’s Cuban issues, fueling a mass defection. The flag incident at the Chicago convention solidified their support for McKinley and Hobart.
Representatives of nearly eighty thousand abstainers attend the opening of the twenty sixth annual convention in St. Louis. Twelve hundred delegates from 864 societies come with ten thousand visitors and more en route from the east and west. Archbishop Kain leads pontifical high mass at St John’s church before a grand street parade with Joseph P Harnett as grand marshal. The opening exercises are in the big auditorium with many speakers including prelates judges and congressmen. An evening rally is reviewed by Governor Stone with remarks from Bishops Keane Cotter Watterson O Sullivan and Glennon among others.
The Wisconsin Republican State Convention in Milwaukee today gathered about 680 delegates. Ex-President Morrison was expected but could not attend. The silver and gold factions are nearly equal and may push for a White metal declaration.
Frank Baltzell secretary of the fusion campaign committee says the Monday election had widespread fraud by Democrats. He claims Populists will not back Bryan and Sewall and will issue a Bryan and Watson electoral ticket. Democrats must drop their ticket and vote Bryan and Watson or lose 100000 Bryan votes.
Lincoln Nebraska Aug 5 Right in Bryan's home state the national prairie campaign began with a convention of the State League of Republican Clubs. President F W Collins opened the gathering at Burlington Beach Park after welcome addresses and the reading of the call. Collins urged Republicans to repudiate the Chicago convention and defend Jefferson and Jackson against Democratic populism and a secessionist stance.
The New England Cigar Makers Blue Label League began its annual meeting in Hartford Connecticut. Amendments to the constitution were discussed to strengthen the movement with agitators across New England. The league is a branch of the International group based in Chicago with about twenty five unions in New England and over three hundred in the U S and Canada. London Aug 5 The Society of Associated Anarchists announce a weekly newspaper to debut next week in London priced at one half penny. It will be called The Alarm reflecting a name once used by A R Parsons who was executed after the Haymarket riot in Chicago in 1886.
Mason City hosts a two day bicycle diamond meet with a track in prime condition. A $1000 prize list tops Iowa bicycle meets this year, with diamonds United States gold and useful items replacing the usual medals.
Grand Rapids Mich Aug 5 The annual regatta of the Mississippi Valley Rowing Association begins on Black Lake under Macatawa Park with crews from Detroit Chicago Minneapolis St Louis Toronto London Ont and local clubs. Jefferson City Mo Aug 5 The Missouri Democratic Convention opens with L V Stephens backed by Governor Stone and silverites vowing to counter gold sentiment.
Denver expected to host the Inter State Sheriffs' Association national gathering with about six hundred members nationwide and an anticipated attendance of five hundred to one thousand. In Oman Nebraska the state campaign opened with speeches by Roswell G Horr and Senator Burroughs focusing on the money question. Local ad notes Mrs. G B Stevenson selling hats for 25 cents.

Martinspure West Virginia reports Henry Frank Keyser a 46 year old clerk in the Treasury Department at Washington died last night of paralysis of the brain. He married Anna Mathews in 1872 who later died leaving two children.
In Omaha a club banquet for Sterling Morton gathered Democratic leaders to discuss Nebraska's action on naming a national ticket to back the gold standard. The event, though billed as a friend reunion, served as a planning conference among prominent state Democrats on currency policy and party direction.
The Goodyear India Rubber Glove Manufacturing Company and the Metallic Rubber Shoe Company, both of Naugatuck, with a combined capacity for 1,400 workers, have shut down for an indefinite period. The closure has caused widespread gloom in the local business community.
