Tax refunds released in Charleston under governor's order

The auditor's office, acting on orders from Gov. Arch Moore, released 9.7 million dollars in personal income tax refunds to 42,546 people. Moore had criticized a higher pending refunds estimate and said 6 to 8 million more would be released by month end. Adams, chief clerk, disputed claims of mismanagement and noted additional refunds and corporate refunds remain unpaid.

Moore unveils pilot program for welfare reform

Gov Arch Moore announced a two year pilot program titled self sufficiency through self employment to aid selected welfare recipients in Kanawha Jackson and Roane counties. Twenty participants may earn or borrow up to $10000 to start cottage industries while continuing benefits. Moore said the plan requires waivers from HHS and USDA and discussed it with President Reagan at the White House.

Vandals Paint Over Twenty Cars in Princeton

Princeton Police seek leads after at least 20 cars were sprayed with black paint early Thursday. Victims include a 1985 Pontiac owned by Dewey R Bailey and several Fords on Bluefield and Princeton Avenues. Biaggi Convicted in Wedtech Racketeering Trial

Rep. Mario Biaggi, senior New York City Democrat, is found guilty on 15 felony counts in the Wedtech case. Co-defendants including Stanley Simon and Biaggi’s son are also convicted. Ethics committee to consider expulsion on Sept 7. Biaggi plans to appeal with sentencing set for Nov 18. He faces up to 40 years on racketeering counts, fines of about 7.4 million dollars, and asset forfeiture of 350 thousand. The trial traced a Bronx machine shop’s rise and bid-fueled political influence for defense contracts.

New River fish kill prompts trout stocking cancellation

A West Virginia Department of Natural Resources official confirms a fish kill in the New River. Virginia game officials also cancel fall trout stocking due to low stream levels, with many streams running dry or intermittent. Fisheries officials report the incident followed notices from area anglers in late July and survey work from Glen Lyn to Elgood.
