News warns Americans to depart Spain amid looming major offensive as rebel and loyal forces mass for a large drive. Fascist focus shifts to preventing rear attacks as Madrid operation begins with attempts to seize San Sebastian.
The Associated Press reports that rebels and loyalists mass north of Madrid with San Sebastian and Zaragoza in play. Hull warns Americans to use the Valencia line if leaving Madrid, while foreign ships await to remove foreigners.
In Spain the civil war intensifies as rebel forces withhold direct attack on Madrid while Government troops claim La Zaida south of Zaragoza. Reinforcements from Pamplona join Gen. Emile Mola for the San Sebastian push as fog and mist slow progress. The American embassy warns citizens to consider leaving for Valencia while rail service remains open.
Heavy WPA funded work ends as the big power shovel moves to Cherry street to cut Frederick street. Drillers plan today to deepen the approach while paving materials arrive for Frederick Ferndale and Maryland avenues. Officials expect improved routes to and from the stadium and airport with broader access and new bleacher stands under preparation.

Mrs Helen MacKnight’s daughter Gladys 17 and her sweetheart 18 Donald Wightman remain jailed in Hudson County awaiting murder charges. The body is to be shipped to West Bathurst New Brunswick while the family grapples with the tragedy and the media glare.
A survey across European capitals shows fear of a new war as rearmament and security failures grow. Hitler’s regime arms, conscripts up to 600,000, and moves in Rhineland alarm Britain and others while Austria Italy and others push toward confrontation amid fragile peace.

In Gilbert West Virginia a widow dies from pistol wounds after a shooting at a home. Police report jealousy and drinking as contributing factors with suspects in custody.
Zeph Ward and his father Epson Ward were indicted by a Martin County grand jury for the bludgeon death of Mrs. Mary Maynard in Beauty Kentucky. Constable Russell Preece said the Wards admitted the slaying, claiming they were drunk after a party. Meredith Maynard, the victim’s son, sought legal help as the suspects surrendered.
Goodyear X balloon defeated the Great Lakes Exposition in a match race finishing at 3 05 p m near Le Raysville Pennsylvania about 40 miles ahead. Exposition landed earlier at Middlebury Pennsylvania at 1 45 p m due to a thunderstorm. Pilot Frank Trotter co pilot Anthony Fairbanks Milford Vanik and John Ker aided the Goodyear X crew.

Newell Paige Sherman 27 died in the electric chair after midnight for the murder of his wife Alice 22 in a canoe tragedy on Lake Singletary near Worcester. He claimed love for Esther Magill 17 as motive and was described as calm and spiritually prepared by the prison chaplain witnesses.
