The West Virginia Funeral Directors association opened its three day convention with C. H. Watkins of Philadelphia detailing a National Funeral Directors code. The proposed rules include limited weekly hours for unlicensed staff and a minimum wage of 15 dollars. Speakers and delegates filled the first day with welcomes, addresses, and legal briefings on WV rules affecting funeral directors.
Warrants were issued for Leo Frazier Charles Harper and Henry Cano in the slaying of Kanawha deputy Roy Shamblin and his prisoner Ralph Harper as authorities pursue extradition for Harper and Frazier from New Rochelle New York. The investigation ties the trio to a robbery sentence and auto theft linked to a running gun battle with officers.

Archibald M. Johnson 42 year old lawyer and son of Senator Hiram W. Johnson killed himself in the library of his San Francisco home after a period of ill health and worry. Investigators cite a headwritten poem referencing loss of fortune and a plea for forgiveness as part of the motive. Johnson had divorced less than two months earlier and remarried soon after in Chicago to Commander Howard A. Flanigan of the U S N.
Charleston WV Aug 1 An engineering setup directs county road supervisors to operate under state oversight. Governor Kump Road Commissioner Bailey and chief engineer Mortimer W Smith outlined that ten district engineers will supervise district maintenance engineers and their teams. The focus will be on the secondary road system created from county-district highways.
Striker 5 killed and Quare wounded as mine disorder protests escalate. Deputies use tear gas to quell clashes with milk producers seeking to block highways. Philadelphia police charge picketers in silk workers strike.
Picket lines in coal silk and milk strikes were broken by pistol fire tear gas and bricks. In Brownsville Pennsylvania a miner died and more than twenty were wounded as deputy sheriffs battled 3000 activists around Frick Coke mines. Troopers and guardsmen faced clashes as milk and silk workers faced police charges and property damage ensued.
The H. C. Frick Coke Company states it will shut all Fayette county collieries indefinitely to avoid endangering workers. The mines will stay closed until state or county authorities guarantee protection for miners on highways.
In New York four counties Oneida Herkimer Chenango and Lewis saw dairy strikes with milk trucks dumped trees and planks on roads. Five farmers were knocked unconscious and injured as state police clashed in Holland Patent Alder Creek and Glenfield. Leaders include Albert Woodhead and Stanley Piseck demanding higher farm shares.
Oil magnate Charles F Urschel was released nine days after being seized by two machine gunners from his Oklahoma City home. Mrs Urschel reportedly paid a large ransom in secrecy, with details guarded. Urschel recalled being blindfolded and handcuffed in a remote shack before a long return home via Norman.
In St. Louis on August 1 a 45 minute police confrontation ended with George Perry, 43, fatally shot after he killed Samuel Murta, 77. Perry fled to a barricaded second floor room in the Erie house hotel where tear gas and fire set by the standoff preceded his death. Maria's body was later found in the basement with throat injuries.
Washington Aug 1 A recovery administration consideration to alter the plan of averaging over six months for a forty hour week faced labor opposition. Labor leaders urged guaranteed one day off weekly and feared cycles of long work followed by short work. Discussions included Swope Lamont and Johnson with Perk ins Green opposing company union voting provisions in the code.
Industrial Administrator Hugh S. Johnson told oil industry groups he would not recommend price fixing to President Roosevelt until production control effects are assessed. Committees from oil factions gathered with him to develop a trade practice plan.
Early returns show George C. Peery leading in Virginia's Democratic primary for governor with 88,542 votes to 23,996 for Deal and 22,806 for Smith among 1,303 of 1,685 precincts. Deal conceded tonight, joining Smith in acknowledging Peery's solid lead amid a torrid campaign and protracted party dynamics.
