A Mercer County Circuit Court jury begins deliberations in the Gary L. Belcher murder trial after hearing testimony from nearly two dozen witnesses. Belcher, a Pineville resident, is charged with first degree murder in the 1985 shooting of his wife Carla at the Mine Safety and Health Administration office. He testified the rifle discharged accidentally during a failed attempt to scare her. Prosecutors say the shooting was premeditated. The trial moved from Wyoming County due to extensive media coverage.

Carousel ponies fetch higher bids at Chincoteague auction
At Chincoteague Va the carnival carousel horses and train-pullers raised 32125 dollars, about half to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and half for winter herd maintenance. Auctioneer says the ponies are the only Chincoteague ponies you can bring home in a car. The 1950s Herschell Carousel horses were retired last spring. The carousel and two cart-pulling horses sold for 16975 dollars averaging 585 dollars each.

In a special meeting the Mercer County Board of Education approved resignations for several staff including Harry L.
