Israel gives cautious approval to the U S Middle East peace proposal as Egypt and Jordan had accepted. The plan envisions a 90 day cease fire and indirect talks under UN auspices with Gunnar V Jarring mediating. Syria and Iraq reject the plan.
BEIRUT AP reports Britain slows the end of its Persian Gulf troop presence, consulting Gulf rulers on stability and oil flow. Iran and Saudi Arabia press for a timely withdrawal while Iraq comments. Talks hint at a planned federation of the nine Gulf Emirates.
About 80 youths from Clifton Forge Covington Hot Springs Iron Gates and Union were arrested on drag racing charges on Mon Cove Lake Road near Gap Mills. The scene held some 30 cars mostly souped up with a few females among the arrestees. many posted fines or were released on bond ahead of August 29 hearings. Investigating officers included Monroe County Sheriff L W Reed deputies Simms and Lawrence and state troopers Line Bright and Lucas.
