Washington reports indicate Berlin crisis talks with Molotov advancing faster than expected. Molotov interrupted vacation to meet American and British envoys as NATO powers demand lifting the blockade and possible broad negotiations with the USSR.
Profits across 200 firms show oil companies leading gains while utilities and food sectors lag. Overall gains range from modest to over 100 percent, with airlines often unprofitable and railroads posting smaller increases. Second quarter profits edge up from 1947 levels as firms plan for lean years.
Washington July 31 AP Republicans say Truman's price control plan flopped with the public. Sen Capehart notes no testifying requests to the Senate Banking Committee, which resumes hearings Monday with Paul Porter to explain the plan. Capehart cites light public response. Democratic leaders counter with letters in support. The banking panel may draft legislation by week’s end. Taft pegs adjournment next Saturday as talks on installment buying and bank tightening loom. Senate action may hinge on anti-poll tax filibuster maneuvers and potential cloture. CIO urges unions to push Congress on housing inflation wages and civil rights before the 1948 elections.
Detroit reports Ford Motor Co. will raise prices again for its passenger cars after the June 1949 model increase of about nine percent. A spokesman said a boost is pending but undisclosed while costs from steel and wage hikes are analyzed. Dealers have been notified price changes may come within days. The CIO UAW recently secured a 13 cent hourly wage rise for 116,000 production workers.
Attorney General Tom C Clark summoned twenty one U S attorneys to Washington for a conference on veterans housing matters August 5 6 The meeting aims to pursue enforcement against violators of federal laws in the construction and financing of veterans housing and related prosecutions in districts with many complaints
Dayton Ohio July 31 A CIO United Electrical Workers union leader said he would attend a scheduled meeting with Gov. Thomas J. Herbert and Univis Lens Co officials to end the 86 day strike amid fears of National Guard mobilization. The governor warned he would deploy guards if needed and ordered several units to prepare. Union leaders sought non striker representation and guaranteed peaceful picketing as talks move to tomorrow in Dayton City Hall.
Soviet delegate Andrei Visinsky challenged Britain France and the United States to join Danube talks or withdraw, saying the door to the conference is open for them to go out. France led a Western bloc stance, with Britain and Austria backing her, while Russia and its allied nations pressed for united action. The vote favored the East 7 to 2 with France abstaining as Austria became an observer.
Benton Harbor Michigan July 31 police claimed a signed admission from a young Negro collegian that he killed a white man because he made some nasty remarks about colored people. The victim Edward Stowe, 29, was shot through the head on a city bus at Benton Harbor’s main intersection as crowds watched. Duain C. Witherspoon, 20, was arrested at his home after officers traced medicine bottles found at the scene.
Envoys from the United States Britain and France met Russian Foreign Minister Molotov in Moscow and presented written terms for entering four-power negotiations to end the east–west Cold War. Walters Bedell Smith Frank Roberts Yves Chatignetu sought Berlin and broader European talks while Moscow warned no quick developments.
Nashua Minnesota July 31 Exploding gasoline hurled a tank truck driver 46 feet and set fires that destroyed several buildings two vehicles and for a time threatened this western Minnesota community The driver William Staff 30 Fergus Falls was critically burned A spark from an electric switch is believed to have touched off the explosion shortly after Staff emptied a load of gasoline into the tanks of a bulk station Occupants of two nearby residences which were burned escaped.
President Truman and Governor Dewey unite at Idlewild New York to dedicate the 5000 acre international airport, calling it the front door of the United Nations and a symbol of peace. A 215000 strong crowd witnessed the event with cabinet members and representatives from 30 nations.
Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, 41, heir to the Krupp munitions empire, was sentenced by an American military court to 12 years in prison for exploiting slave labor and plundering occupied territories. Ten Krupp officials received sentences, with Karl Heinrich Pfirsch acquitted. The six month trial, led by Judges Anderson Daly and Wilkin, hinged on a verdict of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
New York July 31 The idlewild international airport dedicated by President Truman and Gov Dewey is the world’s largest and most costly commercial airport. It covers 4 900 acres and has cost about 60 million dollars since April. By 1954 total outlay may reach a quarter‑billion. Idlewild exceeds La Guardia Newark and Washington airports in size and capacity with six runways and a seventh under construction. The port authority expects permanent terminals offices a garage and a hotel with 15 000 parking spots. Two hangars are in service with two more due by end of 1949.
Colonel W H Ballard of Welch was elected president of the West Virginia Moose Association at the 15th annual convention in Huntington. Delegates chose Fairmont for the 1949 gathering and heard criticism from U S Senator Revercomb about subversive elements.
Dallas, Tex. July 31 Several hundred Dallas housewives will urge a week long meat boycott starting Aug 9. Led by Mrs R D Vaughn former insurance saleswoman and now president of the Dallas Women's Chamber of Commerce the plan calls ring every phone in the book to spread a motto we are asking you to refrain from buying meat for one week.
Ninety eight of the army's new one year enlistees aged 18 and 19 arrived at Fort Meade from Fort Dix to start their training. Most are from Ohio New York and Pennsylvania with one from Maryland and two from Washington DC. They join about a thousand other beardless G I s assigned to the third cavalry group for basic eight week training and armored cavalry tactics.
Congress heard a dramatic claim that Russia obtained wartime secrets with help from former U S aides and Treasury officials. Elizabeth Bentley named Lauchlin Currie and Harry Dexter White as sources, and alleged a Silvermaster group fed information to the Soviets through a chain involving others in Roosevelt's era. She depicted two main communist-linked camps in government and urged a broad grand jury inquiry into spionage.
