Five teams have joined the West Virginia Southwest Virginia semi pro baseball league for the coming season, said T. W. Hatfield. Prospective teams are asked to contact Hatfield at Route 1 Bluefield West Virginia or call Princeton GA-5-6416. The league will meet Friday at 7:30 p m at Graham High 1 in Bluefield Virginia.
Richard G. Shrider, former Ohio State Michigan and Ohio University star, was appointed head basketball coach at Miami University Oxford by Athletic Director John L. Brickels. Shrider previously coached at Pairborn High School, succeeding Bill Rohr who left to coach Northwestern.
Chicago April 29 The Illinois Athletic Commission will appoint the referee for the Gene Fullmer Ray Robinson middleweight title showdown at Chicago Stadium. Officials warned against rabbit punching or clinching as the 15 round telecast fight nears. Gate projected near 175000, attendance up to 14000, with odds about 2 to 1.

Chicago April 29 Bob Rush the Cubs top pitcher last season at 13 10 was demoted to the bullpen by Manager Bob Scheffing. Scheffing said Rush would lose his starting turn for a while and work in relief as the Cubs open a long eastern swing tomorrow night at Brooklyn.
Australia will invite world class swimmers to international carnivals at the Melbourne Olympics pool next April. An invitation has been sent to Holland for two or three swimmers to compete, with funds toward training and equipment for the next Australian empire and Olympic games swimming teams.
Princeton pitcher Larry Ayers spun a two hitter, striking out five and walking one in a seven inning 10 to 0 win over Graham. Faulkner homered for a three run blast as Princeton totaled 13 hits led by Ayers and Faulkner. Graham starter Frank Smith took the loss with Dick Asbury finishing.
Charleston reports Harry Van Meter resigns as chief of the State Conservation Commission Fish Division to join the U S Fish and Wildlife Service. He served eight years with the commission and three as head. The resignation becomes effective May 22 and leaves the division with three technicians.
Welch Maroon Wave piled up 18 runs on nine hits while Beaver made ten errors in an easy win. Phillips and Gunter had two hits each for Welch, Tibbs and Matney led Beaver with two hits apiece, Shawver added one.
Brooklyn Dodgers president Walter O'Malley will fly to Los Angeles for a routine inspection of the team’s new farm property. The trip fuels speculation the Dodgers may move their franchise to the Pacific Coast, though officials call it routine.
