Math becomes presidential honor for War teacher
Donna Hardy Linkous, a 36 year old War Elementary Annex math teacher, was named a 1990 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching honoree. She received a trip to Washington and a $7500 NSF classroom grant after a statewide nomination. Linkous advocates hands on, calculator aided learning and concrete foundations for seventh and eighth graders.

Mud Pig Day celebrates break before finals at Bluefield College
Bluefield College in Bluefield Virginia held its annual Mud Pig Day with sunny 80 degree weather. Students, faculty and staff joined sack races tug of war and a dunking booth after noon. Fire Department and rescue volunteers watched over the muddy fun while a Canadian band Earth Tones performed. The event, now 15 years running, now features a pig roast replacing the former greased pig contest.

City Board sets Easley Bridge route plan in Bluefield
BLUEFIELD The Bluefield City Board will hold a special meeting at City Hall to pass a resolution on an Easley Bridge replacement route. After a long public hearing Tuesday the board took no action and Mayor Brammer said Alternative 4, with adjustments, could move the bridge two blocks west. The plan includes clover leafs linking the bridge to Bluefield Avenue, and a letter will be sent to the state Department of Highways to urge action. Vice Mayor Shields expects the decision to satisfy all involved.
