John L. Lewis urged the United Mine Workers policy committee to reconvene in New York after a fruitless day of negotiations with Appalachian soft coal operators. The 150 member body had been sent home two weeks earlier as talks stalled between four union reps and four operators.
Koppers company posted net earnings for the year ending March 31. Earnings per share were $5.39 on 200,000 shares of 6 percent cumulative preferred stock.
Washington reports the Ways and Means Committee approved a three year deferral of a scheduled Social Security tax increase.
