In San Francisco the Richfield tanker owned by Richfield Oil blew up at Union Iron Works killing two workers, including Frank Vega, injuring five others with burns and broken bones. The blast shattered windows within a mile as mechanics ignited gas vapor in an empty tank.
Chicago observers consider a Black candidate likely to replace Martin Madden as representative for Illinois first district on the November ballot. The district committee of the Republican party and election officials will decide, with at least two Black committeemen among five South Side ward members.
Washington April 28 The famous pilot Lindbergh renewed his transport license and certified 2520 air hours 7800 flights and 7800 passengers carried totaling 200000 miles flown. He is Pilot No 69 with the highest certificate enabling operation of any plane in any service. The passenger total exceeds that of many pilots who have flown similar distances. The record stems from demonstrations in Washington.
New York April 28 The Bremen crew three fliers may attempt a return voyage from Baldonnel field Ireland to New York after their east to west crossing. They plan to bring the Bremen to Mitchell field then fly back to Baldonnel and on to Greenly island before attempting New York in two weeks. They cite instrument needs and magnetic disturbance near Labrador and note no overhaul of the motor, which is fine. They say a return from Greenly Island is unlikely due to wilderness but may retry if conditions allow. They aim to advance commercial ocean flying with proper organization.
Chicago observers report 230 delegates pledged to William L. Lowden from 31 states and three territories, versus 204 for Herbert Hoover, with 268 in the doubtful column. Curtis and Idle also appear in smaller tallies. Lowden's home state shows 49 delegates claimed and 12 in the doubtful column.
A flurry of candidacy filings arrives at the West Virginia secretary of state office with George H. Miller of Wheeling among six Republican contenders for governor. Others file for state offices including district races for Senate and a slate of state auditor, superintendent of schools, and congressional seats as the deadline nears.
National Boys Week assigns a full crew of boy city officials for one day in Bluefield with Paul Hudgins directing public service and Fred Goodall and Chester Harris overseeing police and fire. Names include Werman Smythe city engineer Louis Duon cannery inspector Bob Clifton police officer and John O Keeffe fireman among others. Tom Lilly yet to appoint assistant as Boys Week begins with sermons and youth officiating in city operations.
April report from Paris notes ongoing improvement in Foreign Minister Briand's condition. The foreign office said diplomats from every government accredited to the Quai dOrsay called or sent expressions of sympathy and interest.
Governor Gore a Republican candidate for US Senate welcomed Secretary Hoover entering the West Virginia primary for president. He expressed it would be pleasing if WV electors favored Hoover and noted their past cabinet service together and his high regard for Hoover as a constructive statesman.
Washington reports the California Democratic primary on April 28 pits Smith of New York Reed of Missouri and Walsh of Montana against Hoover and Lowden in the nomination race. Delegates awarded show Smith's backers pushing for inevitability while rivals contest counts. The Democrats seek 738.5 delegates for nomination with Kansas City 645 needed for victory.
In Ohio Smith and Hoover posted strong results boosting their camps hopes while Massachusetts delegates split. Smith claiming 36 of 36. Hoover teams predicting 27 of 39. Democratic side shows Ohio slates and Columbus break favoring Smith though Pomerene pledged for the delegation.
Hoover mounts a clean sweep in California with no opposition in the Tuesday primary and is expected to secure 20 convention votes. His managers also target uncontested delegates in Oregon Maryland and New Jersey while rivals claim definite delegate prospects ahead.
Col. Charles A. Lindbergh arrived in Washington from New York landing at the field amid plans to depart again the next day. Officials offered no details on his onward schedule.
In Charleston WV on May 29 Hoover and Smith contend for the presidential nomination while Reed and Goff challenge on the Democratic and Republican sides. Unpledged delegates surface as Reed allies push a Smith anti unpledged strategy, with Herold coordinating Reed's West Virginia effort.
