Economists say West Virginia's jobless rate is climbing again signaling continued recession effects though not as severe as the early 1980s when up to one in five workers were unemployed. Anita Hill is a political force post Senate hearings with national resonance in 199% campaigns.
The Bland Board of Supervisors heard a request to open Bland Public Library Monday through Friday, seeking a five day operation beyond the current three day week. Separately, WVU's Steve Grant and Virginia Tech's Damien Russell were among selections on the NFL draft's second day.
Sheriff D B Don Meadows announced a crackdown on destruction vandalism and theft of political signs and posters. He instructed law enforcement to charge those caught damaging signs with destruction of property carrying up to one year in jail and a $100 fine. The Greater Bluefield Jaycees host Bosses Night Dinner at Bluefield Country Club at 6 30 p m with 1991 Boss and Citizen of the Year awards and guest speaker WV Agriculture Commissioner Cleve Benedict. Admission is 18 dollars per person.

Bluefield and Bluefield Va proclaim Wednesday as Army National Guard Day to honor local Guards personnel. Lt. Gen. John B. Conaway Chief of the National Guard Bureau will keynote the 88th Greater Bluefield Chamber dinner. Mayor Paul Cole and Mayor Cecile Barrett praise the Guards for disaster aid and national security. Proclamations and city keys will be presented at 5 pm with 249th Army Combo Band providing music at Mercer County Airport reception.
The West Virginia Poll shows 79 percent concerned about crime in schools with wide support for measures including fining parents posting security guards at schools and mandatory locker searches. Majorities favor juvenile detention for weapon carrying and metal detectors with strong regional variance and a 4.9 margin of error.

TAZEWELL Virginia defense attorney James E. Slone filed a motion in the Tazewell County Circuit Court asking to quash the perjury indictment against Sherry Howell of Big Vein. Howell testified in the 1989 Easy trial related to Ealy’s capital murder case and faces a June trial after posting a $10,000 bond.
