Diocese installs cameras after parishioner thefts cited

Tuesday Cleveland AP report says the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland faced over 1 million dollars in thefts from four churches. Video cameras captured five trusted parishioners stealing from the collection plate. Authorities say suspicions rose as weekly collections dropped by about 2000 dollars at one church.

More than 550 Arrested at CIA Demonstration protest

Demonstrators blocking access to CIA headquarters in McLean Virginia led to more than 550 arrests during three days of protests against American policies in Central America and southern Africa. Police counted 355 arrests by Fairfax County officers 90 of them jailed for not identifying themselves 183 by Park Police and 15 by the Federal Protective Service.

Frazier Refuses Health Board Request in Mercer County

Princeton Mercer County Circuit Judge John R Frazier declined to grant a temporary order to the county Board of Health against the county commission over unpaid fourth quarter funding. He tentatively set a final hearing for May 8 after three hours of testimony and warned any crisis could trigger state health department involvement and potential charges to the county. The commissioners argue they cannot pay $30,000 for the quarter.

Mortgage auction of low-cost housing called off

The Reagan administration canceled a Monday auction of federal mortgages on low and moderate income housing after a federal official warned the sale could push displaced families from their homes. The mortgages, with a face value of 410 million dollars, fund properties that limit rents and tenant types under federal aid.

Bakker urged not to return to PTL as Falwell considers quitting

In Columbia two PTL board members urged Rev Jim Bakker not to return despite his threat of a holy war to regain control. Rev Bailey E Smith said board chair Rev Jerry Falwell may resign at Tuesday's Fort Mill meeting, risking the rest of the board. Smith noted financial harm from the PTL scandal, with Falwell claiming a $2 million loss. Falwell denied any deal with Bakker and referenced Bakker's past sexual scandal. A caller at Bakker's Palm Springs home declined further comment.
